The Doe’s Fund Non -Profit Organization 345 E102nd Street #305 New York, NY, 10029 TO: Mrs. Jennifer Mitchell (CEO of Doe Fund) FROM: Arlette Campbell SUBJECT: To recommend a strategy of homelessness and job opportunities for all. DATE: April, 03, 2023 Summary: Currently, in New York City there is a rise in homelessness. Due to the pandemic, this heightened influx of homelessness has been a major concern. Along with an increase of immigrants coming to NYC which contributed and created less accommodation for the homeless situations. An uncertain supply of funds and a limited amount of space for accommodation: Right now, in NYC. there are about 70,000 men, women and children who are homeless, which is the number reported by shelters around the city ( Resnick, 2009). Not counting the number of people who are unsheltered and live on the streets, subways and abandoned houses all over the boroughs. In its 2021 report to Congress on the state of homelessness in the United States, the Department of Housing and Urban Development could not accurately count the number of unsheltered homeless people (Henry et al., 2022). One main problem that your non-profit organization could be facing is the uncertainty of funds to accommodate the sole mission of the
organization, which is to provide housing and career training. Given that the program relies heavily on grants and funding from local and government agencies, this can pose a major problem. There is already a shortage of low-cost housing, and shelters around NYC are packed to capacity, causing an influx of families and individuals on the streets ( Swarns, 1997). As a result, organizations and foundations have seen their funding and grants slashed, because of the need to fund a broader base of organizations to deal with this new crisis. Due to the number of homeless, government funding becomes stretched to all the other non-profit and government programs that provide housing as well. Considering the unique structure of your organization and its ability to assist incarcerated men and reduce recidivism, this may pose a problem for your organization (The Doe Fund, n.d.). The main mission of the Doe Fund program Ready, Willing & Able, is to be able to help others get financially independent and economically stable within one year (Resnick,2009). The organization would solicit all the funding and accommodations needed to keep the program a continued success. The primary goal is to help people become self- sufficient through the provision of temporary aid and support ( Calderón-Valencia, 2023). Rapid Housing as an alternative action: Consequently, one alternative is to create ‘Rapid Rehousing’ as a strategy that assists individuals and families in stable and secure housing in a shorter period from the previous program. Instead of one year and only for incarcerated men, the organization can extend the program to families and individuals and can accomplish it within six months, which will allow more people to participate. By expanding the program, it will serve diverse groups of individuals and meet the needs of other homeless groups. Having more tailored and structured training will allow the organization to provide tools, skills, and other support services necessary for economic stability. By prioritizing solving homelessness problems such as finding stable homes for people in need
before addressing concerns like mental health, substance abuse, and employment.( Fastenberg, 2011). It can help people feel safe in their homes and improve their overall health and resilience in the face of adversity. The goal is to help people overcome obstacles on the road to independence in a setting that is both safe and encouraging. Since the program is self- sufficient, and participants work within the organization, it can help them develop skills and a clearer path to economic freedom. ( Resnick, 2009). A method to accomplish this is developing alliances with other organizations to offer resources like building a partnership with businesses, companies, neighborhoods and government and other organizations that can help provide more resources that specialize in low-cost and housing expansion, addiction counseling, mental health, and job training. The program offers an efficient solution to provide immediate housing not just to men previously incarcerated but to families and individuals in New York City and create an effective way to reduce the number of people living on the streets . The goal of the initiative is to provide those who need help in the city with shelter as quickly as possible. Rapid Housing could provide stability and security to those that are homeless, allowing them to focus on employment and other opportunities. The program's goal is to decrease the number of people who are homeless while also providing them with a sense of stability and security in their lives. With being able to have a program that can help with facilitating individuals with proper training and job opportunities, it can be an even bigger successful story for the organization. The use of their own volunteers to assist with outreach initiatives and support services for people in need. Having their own graduates from the program is also good. Rehiring staff members and volunteers who have already been through the program can be inspiring and motivating to its new members. Volunteers can increase an organization's capacity to conduct

outreach initiatives and aid homelessness. Giving the program more exposure for funding as they help not only men, but also families get their lives back together. It is important for the program to raise public knowledge of homelessness and the resources accessible to them to increase support and action. Attention given in public will create more private donations and assistance from the public. Creating grant-writing and fundraising campaigns to help the group raise more money. By doing so, you can increase the organization's capacity to provide resources, and the campaign can aid the organization in obtaining more funds. As a result of computer background checks used by potential employers, people who served time in prison, have used addictive substances, or have a history of mental illness face difficulties finding employment for years at a time. The organization sees this is a good fit to step in and help those in need. Rapid Housing could be expensive for the city to implement and maintain. This program can be particularly challenging to implement as it will require continuous financial support. There may be limited social services and support for those receiving housing. This can be difficult with the lack of funds distributed among other organizations. It could also be difficult to find suitable housing for those who are homeless, as the city is already facing a housing shortage. This can also be an issue since there may be some resistance from landlords who do not want to rent to people who are homeless. This is major since it could also be difficult to ensure that those who are receiving housing are using it as intended to seek better lives. It may include the costs of finding housing, despite the city's
housing shortage, and the costs of providing social services and support. Furthermore, landlords may be reluctant to rent to homeless individuals because they fear losing their security deposits. Providing safe, secure, and affordable housing to the financially underprivileged is difficult due to a lack of urban housing projects. The program also faces limited resources to facilitate the inflow capacity of new clients. Even though the program is self-sufficient in having its workers provide services back to the facility, it can create a shortage of resources to keep all the staffers plus new attendees. Recommendation: The main goal strategies are to lessen homelessness aiding persons at a particularly elevated risk of becoming homeless with money and other resources. Your organization should do more research to determine what services are needed by the city's homeless population, review the effectiveness of existing programs, and compare the pros and cons of various solutions to determine which ones are realistic and effective. It is possible to achieve desirable outcomes by collaborating with other relevant entities and individuals and making effective use of existing resources (such as data and tools). Using data and analytics can assist the company in understanding the needs and services of the affected people. In this way, they can guarantee that they are providing the best support and resources possible. Building an online or mobile platform to help the homeless by giving them information about nearby shelters, food pantries, and other resources. By creating an online or mobile platform, the organization may help them have easier access to its resources. Giving homeless people information about nearby shelters, food banks, and other options can help them find the assistance they require.

Summary Doe Funds must overcome several obstacles as a non-profit foundation to accomplish its organizational objectives. To effectively accomplish its organizational objectives, Doe Funds must create a thorough plan that considers these concerns addressed. They must set up precise metrics and reporting mechanism to combat its mission effectively. The foundation must set itself apart from its rivals by being efficient in managing their volunteers and staff by monitoring and reporting its effects. Their focus remains to secure permanent housing and employment. Breaking the cycle of addiction, criminal recidivism, and homelessness of the less fortunate. Offering services of hope and skills to help them navigate through life after prison or tough times is life changing for them. This will separate them from its competitors and help build a solid reputation to attract donors. If Doe Funds accomplish its objectives and properly handle them, then they can secure the organization’s long -term viability. References: Calderón-Valencia, C. I. (2023).
