Running head: 3-1 MILESTONE 1 3-1 Project Milestone One Antonio M. Taul Southern New Hampshire University SPT 600: Mgmt of Sport Organizations Dr. Janet Howes
3-1 MILESTONE 2 3-1 Project Milestone One The NFL starts with a mission statement that reads, "We are all stewards of football. We unite people and inspire communities in the joy of the game by delivering the world’s most exciting sports and entertainment experience.” (NFL.com, 2019). The organization feels that it is its duty to bring the world together through the game of football, while inspiring change within the community. “Every member of the NFL community embraces our unique leadership role in society and assumes the trust, character, and responsibility that comes with that role. We bring fans and communities from all walks of life to celebrate a game that is constantly evolving.” (NFL.com, 2019) The NFL states this as its responsibility to the community. Vision The organization functions on a belief in core values that are the basis and foundation for the league itself. These values are Integrity, Respect, Responsibility to the team, and Resiliency. Through respect, the league tries to honor and value every person no matter the position or their stature throughout the community of fans as well as employees. Through many different initiatives, the league supports many causes throughout the season. Pink for breast cancer awareness month, camouflage for honoring servicemen in the military. They’ve even started putting slogans of inclusion on their helmets and endzones. “The N.F.L. will allow players to display messages of social justice on their helmets and will stencil the slogans “It Takes All of Us” and “End Racism” on the end zones at every field as part of an effort to show solidarity with the protest movements against racism and police brutality, league officials said.” (Levenson, 2021).
3-1 MILESTONE 3 Core Values With integrity, the league strives to set an example that sees them doing the right thing in any situation. Also to function with a high level of accountability for its employees. However, this value is the most scrutinized by fans and opposition to the NFL and its policies. The league’s integrity has been put into question throughout many scandals. “Lately integrity has been in short supply as allegations of cheating and misconduct from multiple teams continue to mount,” (Tomlinson, 2015). Another one of their core values would be Responsibility to the team. “Our fans give us their hearts. Our communities see themselves in us and we see ourselves in them. No matter how much we accomplish, no matter how successful we are, no one is bigger than the game. Everything we do has a consequence for someone else. We embrace our interdependence. We humbly strive to make our teams, our players, our fans, and our communities proud and better.” (NFL.com, 2019). Lastly, the NFL values Resiliency. They look to always bounce back from any situation that may paint the NFL adversely. Adapting to changing situations has allowed the league to thrive among fans for many years. Governing Body. The NFL doesn’t have a traditional governing body with the entity of the NFL acting onto itself when it comes to self governing the league. The NFLPA or players association acts as the union for the players and represents them on things such as wages, working conditions, and hours. (NFLPA.com, n.d.). NFL operations oversee all matters of football on the field as well as off the field. Under the leadership of the commissioner, they decide everything from new technologies to implementation to disciplinary actions for employees and players. This falls under the purview of the rules and compliance department. This department works hard to come up with personal conduct policies that hold everyone

3-1 MILESTONE 4 accountable for their actions. If a player or employee violates these policies, then they are subject to fines, suspension, and even termination. For example, former NFL running back Ray Rice saw his career end after a domestic violence incident in 2014. Initially, the NFL suspended Ray Rice for the incident, before all the facts were present. (Elliot, 2014). Only after a video of the incident surfaced and the league began receiving backlash for how it dragged its feet, did they suspend him indefinitely, after his team cut him. Governing Body Cont... Traditionally companies are run with a sort of checks and balances, but since the NFL governs itself, the final word is left up to the commissioner. However, the commissioner works for the 32 owners of NFL franchises. Those owners vote on rule changes and revenue situations, but the commissioner is the last line when it comes to disciplining the players. The owners are satisfied with the job that the commissioner has done. He was just given a 3 year extension valued at over 200 million dollars. (Fisher, 2023). Even with his success, he has faced scrutiny as well. Some people say he’s lax on punishments depending on who the person is. As an observer, he often takes a wait and see approach before disciplining players, especially if there is law enforcement involved. During the protest of Colin Kaepernick after the murder of George Floyd by law enforcement, the NFL tried its best to remain neutral and not alienate the law enforcement community. The commissioner states, “NFL family is greatly saddened by the tragic events across our country" and the "protesters' reactions to these incidents reflect the pain, anger and frustration that so many of us feel." (Goodell, 2020). Organizational Structure . The NFL has a hierarchal structure. “A hierarchical organization structure is the pyramid-shaped organization chart. There is one role at the top of the pyramid and the chain of command moves down, with each level decreasing in responsibilities and authority.” (Organ, 2023). At the top of the pyramid are the owners. Below
3-1 MILESTONE 5 the owners is an executive committee comprising 32 members and 32 alternatives. Below them is the secretary, the treasurer, and the commissioner. Anyone below the answers to the commissioner, who answers to the owners of the teams. Much like any organization, you’re not going to be able to please every consumer with everything you do. The NFL does its best to live up to those core values of respect, integrity, resiliency, and responsibility to the team. By holding itself accountable along with anyone who represents the brand they look to usher in the next generation of the NFL as an organization. They’ll continue to strive to become the best version of the league it can be while continuing to maintain the standard and the vision and mission.
