Balancing Priorities at Clif Bar Mini Case #2 1. Without knowing Gary Erickson’s age, where would you guess he falls in the four generations of workers as delineated by Zemke? If I were to blindly guess on Gary Erickson’s generation due to his work ethic, and accomplishments, I would say that he is a part of the Gen Xers. Erickson is an entrepreneur who started an accomplished business because he didn’t like the taste of an energy bar. After a year of hard work and dedication he was able to create the now famous, Clif Bar. Erickson believed in his brand and chose not to sell so that he wouldn’t lose control of his creation. According to the researcher, Zemke, Gen Xers are entrepreneurs who embrace change and seek a work life balance. Erickson puts his employees and wants them to feel at home while at work, in doing so he placed a gym, hair salon, dance floor, massage, trainer’s, and plenty of other amenities in the workplace to make his employees feel comfortable. 2. Consider the key work values in Table 5.1. Recalling that leaders are motivated to act consistently with their values appear to be most important to Gary Erickson? Gary Erickson is both creative and innovative. As most Gen Xers he believes in the “work to live” motto. Erickson promotes a sense of accomplishment as he encourages his employees to complete volunteer work on company time and use
company funds to pay for their traveling fees to help developing countries. This is a very generous and creative way to get others involved in helping those who are less fortunate. Erickson also promotes a healthy lifestyle by having a gym, personal trainers and a dance floor at the workplace for his employees. The thought of happier employees will promote a healthier personal and professional life for his employees. Gary Erickson has accomplished so much within his company.
