Kathlyne Alilain Dr. Trusty MGMT 3080-06 13 Feb. 2024 Group: United Airlines The primary stakeholders for United Airlines are the employees, customers, investors, and governments. Customers and employees are crucial stakeholders as their satisfaction and loyalty directly impact the airline’s success, efficiency, and reputation. Investors have a financial interest in the company’s performance as they own shares of the company and must monitor profitability. Governments and agencies influence the airline industry and the airline must comply with regulations and policies. The secondary stakeholders are local communities, environmental groups, and competitors. Local communities around the airline are impacted by its activities, which include, noise levels, traffic, etc. Environmental groups are concerned with the carbon emissions, noise pollution, and other environmental impacts of the airline. Lastly, competitors and their actions can influence the market share and profitability of United Airlines. United Airlines engages with government officials at all levels, along with stakeholders to advocate for policies and a regulatory environment. They directly engage with policymakers and stakeholders to pursue policies that prioritize the safety, efficiency, and reliability of their aviation system. They partner with governments on policies aimed at improving safety, security, and protecting the environment, along with the welfare of their workforce and customers. United Airlines also has an established Board on which it is responsible for estabishing broad corporate policies and overseeing the company’s business and strategy on behalf of the stockholders and stakeholders. It has 6 committees: audit, compensation, executive, finance, nominating/governance, and public responsibility, and all Board of Directors are elected annually by stockholders. They all collectively work to address many issues including climate change, safety, human capital management and diversity, equity and inclusion, etc. They work with the CEO, ALPA director, and IAM director in order to address any issues. United Airlines also partners with non-profit organizations to work with local communities on their impact. They invest in programs that educate and encourage new generations and improving on their response to natural or manmade disasters to local communities. The company has identified safety and reliability concerns of customers and employees in regards to recent incidents with certain aircrafts. They responded by putting in place a robust safety management system and constant investment in infrastructure, training, and tools to be available. The system focused on safety policy, risk management, assurance, and promotion. They also launched a full safety campaign called No Small Roles in Safety to emphasize the importance of actions no matter how small or big when it comes to safety and prevention. They also implemented an internal safety excellence program and conducted a study among pilots and flight attendants to gain better insight into turbulence risks. The company also addressed the concerns of environmental groups on the airline’s carbon footprint and general environmental impact. The company addressed it by co-leading the broad-based coalition of airlines, SAF producers, labor unions, and technology companies to pass climate legislation that invests in green energy among other initiatives.
The economic environment surrounding the airline greatly influences its industry. Economic downturns may lead to a decrease in consumer spending on travel which then impacts the overall revenue. Additionally, fuel prices can fluctuate drastically, which can greatly affect the operating costs for the aircraft. In the legal environment, United Airlines must comply heavily to regulations for safety, security, and international agreements. Changes in these regulations and agreements such as security protocols can cause significant adjustments and investments. Lastly, in the technological environment, advancements in technology is crucial in the airline industry. Developments in aircraft design, navigation systems, and digital platforms for ticketing and customer service can impact operational efficiency, customer experience, and overall competitiveness with other airlines.
