Capstone Task 5: Reflection By Omarah Clayton A1. Significant Strength Value Innovator: I see a need and try to create a valuable solution. Elderly and Chronically ill patients who are independent need reliable transportation to and from their doctor appointments. Many companies take their industry's conditions or economic scenario as given; value innovators don't. (Mohan, July 2019) Businesses usually compete in a market full of "me-too" products or offerings. Hence companies tend to look for opportunities within the parameters of the given constraint, i.e., their capabilities (strengths) and assets (plant, machinery, people, etc.). Many companies let their competitors set the parameters of their strategic thinking; value innovators do not use their competitors as benchmarks. (Mohan, July 2019) Value innovator concept: Value innovators look for what customers value in common. They always ask, "What if we start anew or fresh?" (Mohan, July 2019) A2. Significant Challenge The greatest challenge for me would be to become a transformational leader. It is a babysitting job ensuring that the innovation has been implemented and that all policies and procedures are followed. I cannot babysit adults unless they are patients needing assistance; I have no patience for employees. I feel that transformational leaders are the ones that keep the doctors' offices running and would be the ones to move plans forward. Transformational leaders focus less on making decisions or establishing strategic plans and more on facilitating organizational collaboration to help drive a vision forward. (University of Massachusetts Global, n.d.) A3. Leadership Development
Seeking first to understand: I am a headstrong person who wants all the information without any fluff. However, in this industry, sometimes most details are fluff. Therefore, I had to learn getting all the information, even the most mundane detail, can make the most difference in any situation. I am also learning this in my personal life. Life Balance: This is an ongoing development and is under significant construction. There isn't much more I can expound on in this area as I am still working very hard to manage. However, there is a drastic difference between where I started to where I am today. Life balance is not just tangible; it is also emotional, spiritual, and could be financial. I learned long ago that "growth is automatic, but development takes pressure." I am still being pressed today, but it gets better as time progresses. A3A. Areas of Improvement I took the assessment in my leadership plan, and I thought I was firm in the areas I need improvement: Be Proactive, Put First Things First, and Begin with the End in Mind. These criteria are the basis for my everyday tasks in my current position. It amazed me that what I do every day is where I need to most improvement. Knowing this helps me to reevaluate my career path and what adjustments I need to make. I like to know what my weaknesses are so I know where to put most of my energy into becoming better as a leader and as a person all around. There is always room for improvement. A4. Idea or Concept Innovation. I had no idea what that word meant, nor had I heard that word before starting this MHL program. It was foreign to me, and being bilingual, my brain could not wrap itself around the word or its meaning. Then, learning that there are two different types of innovation threw me into a mental spin. I spent many hours with my Mentor so that she could explain what innovation was in a way that I could fully understand. After learning about innovation and that it can be disruptive, I want to change everything, starting at the top. I want to start in the legislature with how this country runs the healthcare system. Legislature is the only place where real change can happen. Because once it is law, everybody has to follow it. It is said that snow rolls downhill. A4A. Effect on Capstone
Innovation for transportation to be added to an organization that does not have a transportation department would enhance several areas of the organization. Personnel to patients would benefit from a transportation department within BayCare Health System. Several primary care offices are reporting decreasing numbers of patients keeping their appointments. Elderly patients in the areas where they are the majority are not keeping their appointments due to a lack of reliable transportation that is stressless. If this can be addressed and improved, the other health system areas can also be addressed. A5. Future Endeavors As I continue working in my current position, I will make it my business to keep pushing to learn the next job I want to promote. I want to work my way up to a hospital administrator or health system executive so that the ideas I have since I started at the bottom can be considered when innovation is needed to improve operations at an organization. I will take everything I have learned about healthcare and innovation to implement my ideas of improving one health system at a time. There are several areas within one health system that need to be addressed. Imagine if several health systems collaborated to the point that all patients could be serviced at any organization and no delays be made because access to records across the board is prevalent. To be continued… "I will not quit; therefore, I can never be defeated." Said the late Pastor Greg Powe. I live by this, and I will be great somewhere, at someone's organization, doing great things.
