What problems does Angela appear to have right now, and what problem-solving strategies might Angela use to approach her problems ? Angela appears to be having trouble with managing her stress levels and learning how to properly communicate her feelings. She needs to effectively learn how to keep calm in tense situations and develop her team management skills. She’ll have to learn how to evenly spread her time at work by relinquishing some of her responsibilities to her staff. She can achieve this by being open about her struggles and receptive to the assistance of her supervisor. This can help relieve some pressure and stress on her part. Some problem-solving strategies that could be useful to Angela are team building. Here she will learn to develop a greater sense of emotional intelligence amongst her team and herself. In this method she can learn to be open and even vulnerable with staff about concerns of the workplace and how work gets done. This can create a positive work environment that effectively and cohesively communicates work expectations and meets business objectives daily. Another strategy that could be useful in conjunction with other methods is creating a SWOT plan. SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Angela could use this type of analysis chart to lay out her current struggles and issues that she’s experiencing with her workload and practice sharing them with her team and family. Lastly, she should also begin prioritizing her personal life and work life. Learning to separate work stress and home life will lessen the load of feeling overwhelmed by the time she prepares to rest at night. Setting aside time to unwind would be beneficial for concentrating on schoolwork as well as relaxing. What is some conflict-resolution strategies Angela could implement to resolve her issues? Angela should first focus on what’s bothering her and define the root of her struggles. From here she can clarify what bothers her and why. She should also practice the method of avoiding. This strategy can be useful when there’s no common solution when the issues are beginning to boil over and soon erupt. This can help Angela avoid speaking out of turn to her supervisor whenever she feels overwhelmed and upset. These steps can help Angela define her issues and avoid the risk of losing her job in the process. What assumptions is Angela making about her new supervisor?
Angela assumes that her supervisor doesn’t respect her. Due to a high demand of tasks going uncompleted at work, that pressure falls onto her when it comes across as Angela not doing her job properly. This has led her to feel like no no one is listening to her and that her staff doesn’t seem to value the same standards needed to cooperate within the same company. Angela has undoubtedly taken on the stress of feeling unheard and feels the work she’s put in isn’t well-received amongst her colleagues. This is what makes her feel more irritable about her new supervisor’s presence. What role (if any) might communication (or miscommunication) play in this scenario? Angela’s methods of communication play a huge role in how she interacts with her staff, supervisor, and family. In all actuality she doesn’t communicate at all. In every aspect of her life it seems she’s quite hostile and anxious. She isn’t in control of her temper and emotions so she’s off balanced when it comes to expressing how she wants to see change in the workplace. This is the same for how she communicates with her supervisor. She assumes his assistance is more of a hindrance and more than likely sees his help as undermining her work performance. Everyone is at fault but her and she needs to take responsibility for how her uncorrected emotions can affect her work life and those around her. Once she learns this, she’ll be able to properly correct her attitude towards her life choices and improve on balancing the needs of family, work, and school. What suggestions can you give Angela for managing her stress? Due to Angela’s high stress levels I would recommend her to first share her issues with someone she can trust. This can be with her husband or even a professional counselor who can help guide Angela through the process of communicating her thoughts and feelings about her current mental state. A workload such as hers isn’t always easy to navigate through and I believe having a neutral party involved could help her map out her stress and relieve her mind of all the tension she’s been holding onto. Another suggestion I’d make would be to find a creative outlet outside of her family, and her job. This could be anything like taking a walk on a nice day, painting, or any activity that she finds contentment in when life begins to get a little rocky. A creative outlet can help to bring sense of purpose and make space to help overcome obstacles (Skarstein, 2020).
