SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY STRATEGIES Scenario #1 The Fanda Fiero was a controversial vehicle, particularly after allegations that the Fiero's structural design allowed its fuel tank to be punctured in a rear-end collision, resulting in deadly fires from spilled fuel. After the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) directed Fanda to recall the Fiero, they recalled the car and put some fixes in place. Which strategy is it? Obstructionist Defensive Accommodative Proactive Explanation: (In sentences explain and justify your thinking about why it is the above strategy.) This scenario uses a defensive strategy. This is because the strategy states that they seek protection by doing the minimum legally required. The Fanda Fiero became controversial due to allegations about an unsafe structural design. Instead of fighting and denying these allegations the company decided to do what the NHTSA suggested and recalled the vehicle. This shows that they decided to meet the minimum legal requirements and just fix what was wrong with the car after the recall instead of taking further steps.
Scenario #2 Nazim Kadri Donuts has made a commitment to the communities in the country. NKD has hired many people with disabilities to work in the franchises. Also, they have been incorporating green building design into new and existing locations. In addition, aims to help economically disadvantaged children participate in the NKD Children’s Foundation camps and programs. Which strategy is it? Obstructionist Defensive Accommodative Proactive Explanation: (In sentences explain and justify your thinking about why it is the above strategy.) This scenario uses a proactive strategy. This strategy states that leadership is taken in social initiatives. Nazim Kadri Donuts shows leadership in social initiatives by taking steps such as incorporating green building designs into their locations. They have also been helping economically disadvantaged kids participate in their foundation’s camps and programs as well as hired many people with disabilities to work with their franchise. Doing these initiatives, the company is taking a lead and setting an example for other companies. NKD is able to address different social issues and commit to the communities they work with my addressing general issues around us. On top of the economic and legal expectations NKD is also able to meet the ethical and discretionary expectations of our society.
Scenario #3 Shady Energy grew wealthy due largely to marketing, promoting power, and its high stock price. Shady Energy was named "Canada's Most Innovative Company" by the magazine Fortune for six consecutive years. However, Shady Energy's recorded assets and profits were inflated or even wholly fraudulent and nonexistent. Which strategy is it? Obstructionist Defensive Accommodative Proactive Explanation: (In sentences explain and justify your thinking about why it is the above strategy.) The strategy used in this scenario is obstructionist. This strategy focuses on the economic priorities of the business and fights social demands instead of adhering to them. Shady Energy had assets and profits that are inflated, fraudulent, or non-existent because they wanted the company to be doing well economically. Shady Energy did not care to meet the legal and ethical demands of the society as long as they were able to prosper economically through their wealth and profits, even if they were not real.

Scenario #4 Widespread reporting in the media about the widespread use of child labourers in the supply chain of Bia, an international sporting goods producer, has created a great deal of concern amongst the public. Bia responds to criticisms about the labour issues. Bia has promised to end contracts with the offending companies immediately. Which strategy is it? Obstructionist Defensive Accommodative Proactive Explanation: (In sentences explain and justify your thinking about why it is the above strategy.) This scenario uses an accommodative strategy. This strategy states that social responsibility is accepted when faced with them. A company would try and satisfy the economic, legal and ethical needs of the society to accept social responsibility. Bia was faced with media reports about their use of child labourers. The company faces this issue by taking responsibility for their actions and fixing their mistakes right away to go with what the society expects. They promise to end contracts with the offending companies to meet the legal and economic needs of the society.

Your Scenario: Davidsons Inc, an accounting firm, makes sure all employees wear masks, socially distance, and constantly use hand sanitizer through out the day. They provided training for all employees on how to work certain aspects of technology to keep the company from shutting down. Davidsons is also constantly planning and coming up with solutions for various scenarios that they may face during the pandemic which could affect how they may operate. Which strategy is it? Obstructionist Defensive Accommodative Proactive Explanation: (In sentences explain and justify your thinking about why it is the above strategy.) This scenario uses a proactive strategy. This type of strategy is taking action ahead of time to avoid facing issues and setting an example for other companies. Davidsons is taking actions ahead of time to avoid employees from getting the virus, the company from shutting down as well as not having to face a huge loss. They are planning ahead instead of waiting for the issue to come to them to be prepared and are taking social initiative to avoid major impacts on the employees and the communities around them. They are able to meet the economic, legal, ethical and discretionary responsibilities on the society.
