Ethics Questions 1. Lying is never justified in a business setting. Agree Disagree 2. With respect to a mandatory course in Business Ethics -- a) I strongly believe such a course is worthwhile b) I mildly believe such a course is worthwhile c) I do not have a view regarding whether such a course is worthwhile d) I mildly believe that such a course is not worthwhile e) I strongly believe.that such a course is not worthwhile 5. Agree ___________ Disagree 6. If a course of action is not illegal, it is ethical. Agree Disagree 7. Some types of behavior that might be viewed as unethical in a friendship or personal relationship are perfectly proper in a business setting. Agree Disagree 8. Employee Reference (hypothetical #1): You receive a telephone call from a company you never do business with requesting a reference on an employee, Mary Sunshine. You believe Mary performs in a generally incompetent manner and would be delighted to see her take another job. You give her a glowing reference. Agree Disagree 9. Employee Reference (hypothetical #2): The facts are the same as question 8, but the company that has called is one that you have done business with for the past 20 years. You give Mary a glowing reference. Agree Disagree 10 A Golden Opportunity (hypothetical #1): Joe Jones, your neighbor and friend, and you bought lottery tickets at the corner drug store. While watching the lottery drawing on TV with you that night, Joe leaped from the couch, waved his lottery ticket and shouted, "I've got the winning number!" Suddenly, he clutched his chest, keeled over and died on the spot. You are the only living person who knows that Joe, not you, bought the winning ticket. If you substitute his ticket for yours, no one will know of the switch and you will be $10 million richer. Joe's only living relative is a rich aunt whom he despised. If you do not switch the tickets, she will inherit his estate. You will switch his ticket for yours.
11. A Golden Opportunity (hypothetical #2): The facts are the same as in question 10, except that instead of having no relatives, Joe has a wife and three children who will have serious financial difficulties without the lottery winnings. You will switch his ticket for yours (and perhaps give her a share of the money "in Joe's memory.") Agree Disagree 12. Labor Negotiations: You are negotiating a labor contract with a union. The union says that unless you increase your offer by 10 percent, it will call a crippling strike. You believe that the union will settle for less. Your boss has told you that the company can increase its offer by 8 percent. There's nothing wrong with telling the union negotiators that the company cannot afford to increase its offer by more than 6 percent. Agree Disagree
