1 Resolving Ethical Dilemmas Describe a specific ethical dilemma based on one of the options above. For this assignment, I choose option one. An ethical dilemma is a situation that conflicts with social work values; hence one has to consider carefully before making any decision. An example of an ethical dilemma is whether a social worker should allow clients to contact them via e-mail or text due to a lack of a support system. Describe the ethical issues in the option chosen. Identify specific values or ethical standards that apply. National Association of Social Workers (2021) has developed some ethical standards that help prevent client harm and ethical violations by social workers through internet searches and electronic communications. According to the ethical standards, for a social worker to conduct an internet search on a client, they should ensure that they obtain informed consent from the client. Social workers should maintain professionalism when dealing with clients to prevent ethical dilemmas. Moreover, a social worker should follow the ethical standards concerning the client's confidentiality and privacy, ensuring to seek informed consent before invading the client's privacy. Identify who is likely to be affected by the ethical dilemma. The social workers and clients are likely to be affected by an ethical dilemma. Despite the ethical dilemma a social worker may face, they should protect their clients from harm as that is their primary responsibility. Describe potential courses of action. According to Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2018), to deal with an ethical dilemma, of should first identify the ethical dilemma and then investigate it. To effectively handle an ethical
2 dilemma, one should seek advice from colleagues and the NASW code of ethics. Social workers should do internet searches with the informed consent of the clients and to help the clients. As for e-mail and texting, social workers should make it clear to the client that they can only communicate with them during working hours, and if the client needs support, then the worker can recommend a support group. Examine reasons in favor of or opposed to the course of action. I agree with the course of action proposed by the NASW Code of Ethics since it is essential to ensure that clients have their privacy and a social worker has access to the information they allow them to access.
