W05 Draft: Project Proposal Name : Boahene Rickson Date : 11/10/2023 Company Data Company: Ghana Cocoa Board The Ghana Cocoa Board is a renowned player in the cocoa industry. GCB is a government- owned entity responsible for regulating and promoting the production and export of cocoa in Ghana. We are the leading producers of cocoa in Africa and also the second largest in the world. Our key customers are local farmers, international cocoa traders, chocolate manufacturers, and many more stakeholders. It has approximately 1,600 skilled workers, over 1,600 of whom contribute to the economy of the country. Its headquarters are located in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. GCB has several subsidiaries, including cocoa processing plants and research institutes dedicated to improving cocoa production. Company History Established in 1947, GCB has played a pivotal role in Ghana's economy and its reputation as a major cocoa-producing nation. Key milestones include: 1947: Formation of Ghana Cocoa Board to oversee the cocoa sector. 1984: Introduction of a mass spraying program to combat pests and diseases. 2005: Launch of the Cocoa Health and Extension Division to improve farming practices. 2010: Implementation of the Cocoa Management System for better supply chain management. Overview GCB's primary mission is to ensure the sustainable development of the Ghanaian cocoa industry. It strives to achieve this through various means, including setting cocoa prices, offering support
to cocoa farmers, maintaining quality control, and enhancing the competitiveness of the industry on a global scale. Over the years, GCB has accomplished key milestones such as mass spraying initiatives, the formation of the Cocoa Health and Extension Division, and the deployment of the Cocoa Management System. These programs have had a significant influence on crop health, agricultural methods, and supply chain management. GCB’s key competitors are; Barry Callebaut Cargill Olam International Issues GCB faces challenges due to unpredictable global cocoa prices and demand fluctuations, which impact revenue streams. Adhering to international standards and certifications while maintaining profitability is a constant concern. Socio-Economic Impact: GCB's operations directly impact the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians, making its success crucial for the nation's economic stability. Sustainable Development Goals: Enhancing GCB's operations aligns with global goals, including poverty reduction, responsible consumption, and climate action. Rational Because of its global significance and the intricacy of its operations, I picked GCB as the subject of my investigation. GCB's significance in the professional services industry, its broad reach, and the problems it faces in a fast-changing business world make it an appealing study subject. I want to gain significant insights into the professional services business, its growth, and the techniques that allow a firm of this size to thrive and adapt by studying their strategies.
