Self Esteem and Self Efficacy [WLO: 1] [CLO: 2] Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 5: Motivation in the Workplace about motivation in the workplace. For this discussion, you will explain the dynamics of how self-esteem affects self-efficacy. Provide an example of an internal or external force that impacts your self-efficacy. Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your classmates by commenting on their posts. Though two replies are the basic expectation for the introduction discussion, for deeper engagement and learning, you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have given to you. Remember, continuing to engage with peers and the instructor will further the conversation and provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with this topic. Continue to monitor the discussion forum until Day 7 and respond to anyone who replies to your post. How does self-esteem affect self-efficacy? Self-esteem is a person’s self-evaluation of his or her self-worth, and self- efficacy is a self-evaluation of a person’s abilities in regard to completing a task successfully (Baack, 2017). Both identifying terms of individual perception are relatable in terms of how a person feels they fit into their organizational environment. A person with low self-esteem may find it more difficult to achieve self-efficacy, but having low self-esteem doesn’t mean that self-efficacy can’t be achieved. A person may have internal or external reasons for not feeling as though they have self-worth, but may still be great at their job and accomplishing task. Equally, a person may feel great about their self-worth but question their abilities when completing task. A study conducted by Gardner and Pierce (1998) does conclude that self-esteem can lead to self-efficacy, and self-efficacy can create self-esteem.
Provide and example of an internal or external force that impacts your self-efficacy. There are many forces that can impact self-efficacy that reach beyond a person’s self-esteem. Internal forces can be a person’s past performances. When past performances are successful, self-efficacy is improved and a person becomes more motivated to achieve their next task successfully. When past performances are not successful and observations are made that other members were successful, self-efficacy is lowered which can lead to anxiety and lowered self-esteem. External forces include being provided the necessary tools and support to successfully accomplish task. Gardner and Pierce (1998) state that leaders should create opportunities for employees to experience success while providing verbal support and recognition for their success. My experiences have shown that when people are successfully completing their assigned tasks, it must be recognized in some way if you want that behavior to continue over periods of time. Recognition feeds their self-efficacy and shows people that their success is valued by the organization. References Baack, D. (2017). Organizational behavior (2nd ed.). Zovio. Gardner, D.
