W5 Discussion "Leadership Colin Powell" Organizational Behavior Leadership – Colin Powell Colin Powell is a retired four star general and was Commander of the United States Army Forces Command. He also served as Secretary of State under George W. Bush and was his National Security Advisor. Listen to Powell talk about Leadership in the video entitled: “Colin Powell Speaks about Leadership.” [You can find the video by going to YouTube and using the search terms, “Colin Powell Speaks about Leadership at Colgate”.] This was an address given to business students at Colgate University. Please respond to the following questions along with at least 2 substantive peer replies (for a minimum of 3 posts): In the many leaderships’ roles Powell occupied, what according to Powell is the role of a leader? How does the individual who is serving as a leader go about seeing that the needs of the organization are met? What advice does Powell have for the business students he is speaking to about leadership? Your initial post should be a minimum of 150 words and specifically reference the applicable elements of this week’s reading. Organization doesn’t ‘t really accomplish anything. Plans don ‘t accomplishes anything, either. Theories of management don ‘t much matter. Endeavors succeed or fail because of the people involved. Only by attracting the best people will you accomplish great deeds. As a former service member, I had a chance to meet General Powell. Of course, it was not under the best circumstances as the War on terrorism was going on, but he still took the time to take to the leaders on what? “LEADERSHIP”. Former Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, General (Ret) Colin Powell spoke that “The role of a leader is to put people, human beings in the best possible environment to achieve the purpose of the organization you are a part of.” He also said, “The day Soldiers stop bringing you their problems are the days you stop being their leader” Gen Colin Powell (Ret). In the military the term leadership is defined as so. Leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction , and motivation. This something we had to memorize for promotion boards, but also to make sure we were setting the right examples for our subordinates. Leadership is the art and science of motivating, influencing, and directing the team to accomplish the mission of the organization. An individual serving in a leader position can get a feel for the organizations needs by incorporating everyone on the team, to include the lowest level. In service meetings, social gatherings during the week, taking time to let the team get to know one another on a personal level goes a long way. Leadership is reflected in the degree of efficiency, productivity, morale, and motivation in the team. As I once heard attitude reflects leadership, so the way you act as a leader is the way your subordinates will act also. Leadership involvement is the key ingredient to maximizing worker performance and their attitude towards their job.
Mr. Powell left the students at Colgate University with a few tips on how to be a successful leader. They are to be ready for any challenge, provide the equipment and tools necessary if you expect your team to be successful, share your knowledge with your troops and do not forget to commend them when it deserves even if it’s just a pat on the back. He also advised them to not work around bumps, remove them and to never turn away from a problem, hit it head on. With over 4500 people in attendance, Gen (Ret) Powell acknowledged to the crowd that he had a lot of success, but also a lot of failures. He also told them to think about the routes they take, like rather than singling one another out to take it as a total body pf experience. Not to go into a funk, but to be able to handle it, analyze it, and roll it up into a ball and throw it over the other shoulder. In other words, just let it be what t is and start fresh again.
