Running Head: TEAM ASSIGNMENT 1 Team Assignment Name: Institution:
TEAM ASSIGNMENT 2 Team Assignment Scenario 1 The scenario is a case of sexual misconduct involving an officer and an inmate. The classification of this case is “Major misconduct (conduct unbecoming an officer)” because it is an infringement of the professional code of ethics on sexual relations that guides the operations of prison officers. The rationale that qualifies this offence as major misconduct is that it contravenes fundamental prison laws on sexual offenses. The officer lacks the legal right to strike a relationship with an inmate since it’s a violation of the system’s code of ethics (WISN 12 News, 2020). Similar cases involving an inmate and officer in sexual sprees are punishable by imprisonment. The officer would earn a less severe punishment if the relationship was not sexual. A recommendation of the officer discipline would be the 1 year suspension without payment. A recurrence of the offense when reinstated shall also earn the officer a termination of their employment contract (WISN 12 News, 2020). These are the disciplinary measures that a prison officer comfortably engaging in sexual relationships with inmates should face. The aim is to give the officer time to understand the gravity of her mistake (Pollock, 2014). Sexual relations between officers and inmates are the seediest image of the correctional system. They taint the reputation that correctional facilities ought to have through the fulfillment of the rehabilitation role that the government bestowed upon it.
TEAM ASSIGNMENT 3 A sexual affair between an officer and an inmate is a grave offense with dire consequences that falls under slippery slope corruption. Slippery slope corruption explains that corruption develops gradually to result in further systematic degradation in the criminal justice fraternity (WISN 12 News, 2020). A sexual relationship begins with friendship that degenerates to flirting, romance and eventually the intercourse. It is a gradual process that happens in discretion since correctional facilities prohibit these behaviors (Pollock, 2014). The panacea to this case is enhanced supervision, using whistleblowers and refresher training. Professional supervision from senior officers acts as a watch tower (Pollock, 2014). Whistleblowers are instrumental in raising alarm if the parties involved are using high secrecy levels. Refresher training reminds the officers of their expected behaviors towards helping the society. Scenario 2 Major misconduct is the classification that best suits this inhumane act of pummeling a helpless inmate who suffers from a mental illness. Correctional facilities also rehabilitate individuals with mental illnesses that committed crimes. The rehabilitation process needs unwavering care and understanding from the prison officers in charge of these inmates. The code of ethics governing the correctional system legitimately disallows any form of physical assault. Officers that use violence against inmates are offenders that are punishable by law ( Ferrise, 2019 ). Importantly, a mentally-ill inmate is a special case that requires constant attention and care for the rehabilitation process to happen efficiently. The officers pummeling the helpless inmate are infringing on his fundamental human rights.

TEAM ASSIGNMENT 4 Physical violence is a grave offence that deserves a prison term, especially when it originates from a prison officer. In this case, the officers’ actions are unjustifiable since inmates are only put through physical punishment if their sentence stipulates so. However, a mentally-ill patient that has not demonstrated any form of violent rebellion should not undergo such humiliation because they are simply helpless. The offense, therefore, qualifies as major misconduct due to the gravity of its outcome on the victim ( Ferrise, 2019 ). Physical body injuries, suicidal thoughts and other worse actions are usually the by-products of this humiliation. The laws administering the correctional system vehemently prohibit the use of force, coercion and verbal abuse by officers towards inmates (Pollock, 2014). For this reason, the offense is an illustration of the selfishness that some prison officers demonstrate in their accomplishment of work duties. The police officers knowingly contravened the civil rights that the inmate possesses by pummeling him. Physical abuse by prison officers is retrogression of system development as demonstrated by this case (Pollock, 2014). The punishment that the officers deserve is suspension for at least a year without salary. The rationale is that it is violation of fundamental inmate rights that the officers must protect at all times ( Ferrise, 2019 ). A serious punishment is critical to ensure that the officers serve as an example to others. It will also communicate to the world that criminal justice is achievable when the rights of prison officers and inmates are protected as the constitution posits. The offense belongs to the slippery slope corruption. The officers engaged in a severe physical assault exercise that left the inmate traumatized and bleeding. It is a gradual process that
TEAM ASSIGNMENT 5 starts with casual physical violence that degenerates into the hostility seen in the video (Pollock, 2014). A recommendation to eliminate these behaviors is using cameras all over the facility to record any deviant actions that inmates and officers commit ( Ferrise, 2019 ). Occasional training is paramount to avoid these incidences because it constantly reminds the officers of their professional duties. Scenario 3 The classification of this offense is intentional misconduct. Probation officers lack the right to randomly record people for their selfish interests. In this case, the incidence is easily connected to child pornography because it shows an ulterior motive. The officer derived pleasure from recording the teen (voyeurism) or had an underlying plan of introducing the unsuspecting teen to pornography (Pollock, 2014). It is not major misconduct since it only involves secretive recording. The officer intended to record the teenager with the understanding that it infringes the privacy of the victim. Intentional misconduct happens when safety and fundamental privacy rights of an individual are violated. The officer’s recording breached these rights. His mission was found on intention to record the youngster (Pollock, 2014). It remains intentional misconduct because the officer never executed any crime against the teenager except for the unauthorized recording. The discipline measure for this officer would be a suspension of 30days without pay. Child pornography begins with these behavioral traits. Demonstrating a serious warning to other officers is necessary (CBS Sacramento, 2019). The officer should earn the suspension to rethink
TEAM ASSIGNMENT 6 their professionalism (Pollock, 2014). The officer showed their conviction towards aggravating the situation and it’s only fair to save the unsuspecting victim. The case is slippery slope corruption. It started out as a record of the teenager house sitting. However, the officer can go further with the action to eventually actualize their perverted ways (CBS Sacramento, 2019). The strategy that can help in eliminating this police corruption form is training and a greater supervision (Pollock, 2014). Training enhances the professional adherence that the officer demonstrates. Enhanced supervision is also critical because it heightens the attention that officers must demonstrate and an extra eye to notice any irregularities.
