The dynamics of the team are crucial in determining whether a project will succeed or fail in the world of project management. Team members frequently lean toward one of two roles as projects progress: supportive or disruptive. To ensure the successful completion of a project, a project manager must have a thorough understanding of these positions and their ramifications. As the name implies, supportive roles are those that help the project achieve its goals. People in supportive roles frequently display traits including teamwork, excellent communication, and a proactive attitude toward problem-solving. They all work together to achieve the same purpose, making sure that everything they do supports the project's goals. The research titled "The Role of Trust in Project Management" (Smith & Jones, 2022) provides an illustration of a supportive role. The study underlined the value of trust in promoting team member participation. Team members are more likely to share information, take reasonable risks, and cooperate when trust has been established—all characteristics of a supporting position. On the other hand, negative roles might stop a project in its tracks. These roles frequently take the shape of negative attitudes, resistance to change, or information withholding that undermines teamwork. The paper "Lord of the Flies in Project-Based Organizations: The Role of Passive Leadership on Creativity and Project Success" (Khan, 2023) highlights a salient example of destructive roles. According to the study, harmful leadership styles like passive leadership have a detrimental effect on project success. When decisive action must be taken, passive leaders do nothing, which reduces the team's ability to innovate and be creative. When I think back on my own experiences, I can clearly remember seeing a harmful role play out in a project I previously worked on. A team member persistently opposed new concepts,
frequently arguing that the old ones were better without offering helpful criticism. As I observed this, it became clear that such actions not only prevented the project from moving forward but also caused a divide within the team. It served as a clear reminder of the necessity of swiftly resolving detrimental roles. In conclusion, the responsibilities that team members play in a project can have a big impact on how well it turns out. While constructive roles help a project succeed, harmful roles can hinder it. Recognizing these roles and successfully handling them is crucial for project managers. Managers may guarantee that team members share the project's goals by developing a culture of open communication and trust. This will ensure the project's successful completion.
