2 Question 1 The Triple Bottom Line or 3BL implies profit, people, and planet bottom lines that an organization is supposed to endeavor realizing to become sustainable in its operations[ CITATION Ros161 \l 1033 ]. This approach means that an organization should aim to generate profits, promote the wellbeing of the society, and preservation of mother planet. Question 2 Functional stupidity implies a situation where an organization or people fail to critically think about what they are doing and using their full capacity by opting to do what rules, formalities, and traditions demand, hindering real progress and realization of intended goals. The individuals involved in performing the task refuse to employ their intellectual capacities and avoid justifying the rationale behind the approach been employed[ CITATION Ros161 \l 1033 ]. Question 3 The statement by the author implies that capitalism approach that uses the top-down management of organization has the effect of exploiting the people or employees and the natural resources for profit maximization while denying universities resources to undertake research and higher education learning mission. The approach insinuated by the author implies a situation where ideas and decisions deployed in an organization are standardized from certain agencies to be applied on the people and local resources without understanding and recognition the unique sustainability problems facing the local scenario. Universal sustainability measures are been used in places they cannot work, resulting into exploitation of the people and natural resources for profit maximization. The author is criticizing the capitalism approach advocated Taylor Fayol Weber (TFW) theory for the problems facing universities and other institutions of higher education for denying them adequate resources to undertake their core missions while creating
3 an environment where people and natural resources are adversely exploited to maximize wealth generation[ CITATION Ros161 \l 1033 ]. Question 4 One of the ways the author illustrates how the contradictory management is affecting the staff is by forcing them to fit into western mold, which is different from their background. The employees at New Mexico State University (NMSU) are being forced to undertake standardized and homogenous global sustainability measures that do not align with the local problems they are facing. Similarly, the author observes that the contradictory management has exposed the staffs at the university to assessment modalities that are not addressing careful adaptation measures for people that fit particular places[ CITATION Ros161 \l 1033 ]. The homogenized higher education approaches the staffs are expected to follow do not respond to local problems. Moreover, Rosile (2016) observes that the contradictory management at NMSU has seen staffs being conditioned into a curriculum that puts local knowledge of solving problems as inconsequential, primitive, and mere curiosity when compared to modern education. Consequently, the experience informs the author to call for a management approach that aligns with and knowledgeable of problems facing the particular place it is been applied. Question 5 One of the measures the university can undertake to become better cultural match and balanced between profit-people-planet is engaging locals to understand the critical effects they are experiencing from environmental changes. The approach can involve engaging locally sourced professionals and elders from indigenous to reflect on how their ways of life has been affected by environmental changes and suggested homemade solutions. This approach will be instrumental in enabling the university to be much connected with the locals’ cultural way of resolving their

4 problems once they understand the impacts they are undergoing and their preferred ways of resolutions that is not harmful to their ways of life. Similarly, the university can diversify its workforce and teams involved in research efforts concerned with local problems by integrating persons drawn from indigenous communities in critical leading decision-making positions. The approach has an opportunity of enabling the teams and management to understand the real problems facing the locals from their shared stories. The organization can also undertake a policy of reviewing its projects regularly to determine they have cultural match. The measure can be undertaken by engaging local leaders to assess how a project is responding to their concerns and areas they feel should be adjusted due to cultural values. Consequently, the university will have an enhanced opportunity to align its sustainability projects with cultural values of the locals. Question 6 It is recommendable for people to have a cultural match since it has the effect of shaping their behavior, attitudes and personal values towards the real problem’s solution in the decision- making process. A cultural match means one will be focused and interested in resolving the actual problems facing the particular through behaviors and attitudes instead of generalizing standardized solutions sourced from unfamiliar sources. This approach will give sustainable solutions since they will match with the particular place’s concerns and interests. Question 7 First Nations University of Canada is currently on par with the work the NMSU is undertaking to attain cultural match in its activities. The status is demonstrated by the initiatives it has undertaken to include indigenous communities to understand the social issues to pay close attention to and how they should be undertaken without hurting their cultural values. However, it is recommendable for the management to consider investing in sponsoring and developing
5 instructors from the indigenous communities to teach at the university. The approach will enhance the ability of the organization to have a better understanding of the local problems from the professionals drawn from the most affected communities.
