Reflecting on Consulting Experience Name Institution Course Professor Date
During this semester, I had been involved in a consultation activity. This activity created a significant chance for me to work with a team and mitigate issues that my client was experiencing. In this context, I will reflect on my journey while navigating on the issues around my client while drawing insights from my course material and personal encounters. Here, I will examine how the project evolved, and the the contributing aspects towards a successful project while paying attention to principles highlighted in the book, “Flawless Consulting” authored by Peter Block. Moreover, I intend to acquire better and informed understanding of the practices as a consultant (Block & Markowitz, 2000) . To what extent was your team able to deliver against the original scope of work in the project agreement? If not, why not? If your scope changed, why did it change? For any consulting project, presenting against the initial work’s scope a vital step that guarantees maximum achievement expectations by the client or the general objectives of the plan. Nevertheless, there were challenges that we faced as a team while striving to meet the set objectives of the project. Initially, we were guaranteed of completing and fulfilling the project’s scope but because of the challenges that arose, there was need to use more adaptive and flexible approaches. Amid the implementation of the project’s scope, we actively interacted with the client in question in order to articulate on the issues they were experiencing. Regardless of our attempts, we learnt that we had not completely articulated on the actual issues around the landscape of the organization (Stevenson et al., 2023). As a result, we noticed deviations in how we approached the clients while examining the main problems that they were facing, which were relevant as we continued to navigate on key issues in the project. The scope of our work changed because of
inevitable and emerging challenges surrounding the client’s necessities. Some of these challenges were aligned to the organizational structure disparities. This allowed us to change the project’s objectives and needs. What helped you deliver results for your client? What got in the way? For us to give better results to our client, various aspects influenced this process. For instance, through active engagements and free flow of communication, we were able to fully comprehend on client’s needs. Frequent monitoring and gathering feedbacks and responses from the client was helpful in identifying and addressing loops. This prevented us from losing the track and focus while addressing the issues affecting the client. Nevertheless, our progress was hindered by certain hindrances. A major challenge that we experienced was internal disputes among the team. Also, deviations in ideas, working approaches and ineffective communication hindered the team’s unity thus influencing the efficiency of the project. Moreover, time limitation and heavy tasks delayed our efforts to fulfil the project within the specified timeframe thus reducing the output. How closely does your experience working in a consulting team align with the consulting experience described by Peter Block in Flawless Consulting? 3rd Edition While navigating on our client’s needs as a team, we upheld the principles stipulated in the book, “Flawless Consulting” by Peter Block. We had a collaborative interaction with the main client (Block & Markowitz, 2000) . Through open communication, we successfully established a concrete relationship with the client. We actively engaged our client during the process of making decisions which made them feel part of remedies. We stressed on the

relevance of realizing the actual challenge more than merely appealing to symptoms. This enabled the team to achieve competent and long term solutions. What did you learn about yourself? The encounters around consultation helped me acquire detailed knowledge of my strengths and areas to develop at a personal level. I realized my capacity to cope up with the changing situations and creatively think under intense pressure. In communicating ideas, I realized the importance of being time conscious and confident as a consultant. As a result of interacting with the client, I gained self-confidence and reinforced my capacity to handle difficult concepts in a more concise and clear way. What did you learn about working with others? Through collaboration and teamwork, I improved on my listening skills. I also acknowledge the relevance of respecting and listening to the views and opinions of team members, though differing from my take. Our team’s growths growth triggered constructive feedback promoting a conducive working environment for active participation without any fear to judge or being judged. In addition, I recognized the importance of solving disputes in a way that fosters positivity in a diverse group. What would you do differently in your next consulting assignment? In my future consulting prompt, stress on the benefit of clearly working on the project and establishing sincere expectations with my client. I would make effective communications concerning timeframes, duties and deliverables in attempt smoothen the consultation process and mitigate changes in the scope. Furthermore, I would ensure the team remain strong by reengaging team members on practices that promote unity towards efficient collaboration. I
would encourage open discussions and undertake frequent check-ins in effort to tackle any emerging disputes or needs (Block & Markowitz, 2000) . In conclusion, the consulting process was a life-changing journey made me acquire greater knowledge on project scoping, client’s interactions and individual development. Despite the issues that we faced as a team, we learnt to be flexible, communicate efficiently and prioritize the desires of the client. Our encounters upheld the principles stated in the book, “Flawless Consulting” by Peter Block while pinpointing areas for improvement particularly executing our roles and meeting the expectations of the client (Block & Markowitz, 2000) . At a personal level, I discovered my strengths and how to improve them. I keenly attained listening skills and the ability to generate constructive feedback. As I await for my forthcoming consultant assignments, I believe that I am well capable of executing and navigating challenges and bring up excellent engagements with clients.
