Wk3Discussion -WMBA-6020-Growth&CompetitiveAdvantageThruInnovation Describe the organization you chose and explain how innovation played a role within it. A company that I used to work for made automobile parts. The part of the company I worked in printed speedometers for all makes of cars. When printing the speedometers, there are several different ink layers that are required to print them. For example, the fuel tank picture is generally an orange color which requires that color to show up when luminated on the speedometer. Printing those colors requires mixing the proper amounts of different colors to create that color. With only printing one thing, not much ink is needed, but a lot of ink needs to go onto the screen in order to fill that section. This tasks used a lot of ink that was just thrown away. The innovative idea that was created was to save that ink to reuse on other prints. Every make of car used the same colors for check engine lights, fuel, etc. If we are mixing this color needed, reusing it would make the process faster and save the company money. There had to be several different containers with clearly marked colors as well as dating them. After a week, the ink wouldn’t hold true to the color. Also, keeping them in air-tight containers to prevent drying out was a must as well. Explain in what ways the innovation either led to growth/created a competitive advantage for the organization or resulted in decreased growth and/or a loss of competitive advantage. Through many trials and errors, the innovative process was implemented. This created a competitive growth since the speedometers could be printed faster because the ink was already made. It saved the company hundreds of thousands of dollars in a year which was a huge competitive advantage. It also created better quality since there weren’t any “miscolored” printing because the ink was pre-made. Since this process made such a huge impact, during downtime, printers made up containers of the special colors to help with cutting time on the printing set up process. Because of the huge impact on the organization, this process was eventually implemented in every chain of the company (Christensen, Hall, Dillon, & Duncan, 2016). Christensen, C.
