Clinical Field Experience A: Language Focus
Part 1 Interview
1.
How do you address language form (vocabulary, grammar, and discourse specific to a
particular content area) and language function (the purposes for communication/use
of language in academic and social contexts) in your classroom?
While my students are in my classroom, I will give the students the opportunity to learn
through writing, listening, reading, and speaking. This allows for all of my students to
have some learning experience and practice whether they are English native speakers or
not.
2.
How do you address the relationship between verbal and written expression in your
classroom?
The relationship between written and verbal expression in my classroom is addressed
with engagement with listening activates that my students will engage with. I will use
multiple facial expressions so that my class knows how I am feeling about what is being
taught so they can see the expressions. I will also change the tone of my voice so the
students can hear the importance of what I am saying or the feeling of what is being
said. I use these nonverbal cues to help my students who are not English native
speaking.
3.
What strategies do you implement to support the various language needs of ELLs?
The strategies that I use in my classroom are to give interactive writing skills and reading
activities to the students to be able to help develop their literacy development, I provide
the class with a warm and welcoming classroom, I give my class the opportunity to
interact with others in class, and I include all my students in everything we do.
4.
How do you provide ELLs with content area instruction that meets grade level
expectations, while supporting their English language development?
a.
My lesson plans are made to be hands on, auditory, and visual for the students.
b.
Create language and subject objectives for every lesson.
c.
Recommend reasonable source material for ELLs.
d.
Connect the contents to the ELLs’ background experience.
5.
At least two additional questions to discuss with the teacher.
How do you coach ELL students?
o
Build a relationship with the students and be able to learn the way of life
and native heritage along with learning methods of each student.
o
I merge the student’s native language.
o
Language skills are taught throughout the lessons.
o
I will slow down the way I speak to allow the students to understand and
remember the information being taught.
How do you make the content accessible for ELL students?
o
I support intellectual capacity.
o
I inform myself on my ELL’s background knowledge.
o
I teach pre vocabulary.
Part 2 Plan and Reflect
While talking and observing, we were able to talk about the issues that are related to
learning English to be able to implement an educational plan. From the interview and watching
the class I have been able to see how much time and energy is put into adjusting to all the
students in her class. It may be a lot, but it is defiantly possible. Educators need to be able to
build and create tactics for instructing all the students and be able to apply every possible tactic
to be able to meet the benchmark for all the students.
In LaTezeon’s classroom, there was one student that really caught my eye, this little boy
was a non-verbal autistic child who struggled with not only speaking but being able to speak his
native language English. He struggled with interacting with his classmates a well because of this
barrier. Talking to Mrs. LaTezeon, I learned that he needs extra help outside of the classroom so
that he can catch up to the rest of his classmates, if that happens. I learned that at home the
little boy’s family will use sign language to be able to help the student be able to communicate
or a vision board to be able to express his needs and wants.
By being able to speak with the little boy’s teacher I want to be able to help him with
becoming more comfortable, being able to try and talk and using his vision board at school to
be able to communicate with his teacher and peers more. I want to encourage him to use
simple English words to start so that he becomes more comfortable with being able to speak
and so he can learn the language. In doing this I will learn sign language and speak the word
that is being signed. I will evaluate him pre and post his work interactions to make sure that my
plan is working for him, and if it is not, I can tweak the plan to make it work for him. This little
boy wants to learn and shows interest in learning.
