LING 3060: Phonetics & Phonology Homework 4: Measuring vowel formants Goal: Learn how to measure vowel formants in spectrograms, using the Praat software package notice that in the last part, you will study your own speech. Instructions Step 1: Read the Instructions in the rest of this handout. Step 2: Extract the files for HW4 from eLC. In lab: Practice measuring F1 and F2 in Praat. 1. Open the vowels_1 WAV file and TextGrid in Praat. 2. Select both vowels_1 files (hold down Control or Command), and open them together by clicking “View & Edit.” You should see the Sound on top, and the TextGrid below. 3. Measure the formants. a. Find the steady state of the vowel: this is where the formants are pretty flat, near the temporal midpoint of the vowel as we measured in class. b. For each vowel in the file, measure both F1 and F2, either by pressing the F1 key and F2 key, or by selecting “get first/second formant” from the dropdown menu. Write these measurements down. c. If you need help , check the figures at the end of chapter 8 in your book to see what formants look like! d. vowels-1 : Vowel F1 F2 [i] 337.20 2179.24 [ ] ɪ 450.22 1930.82 [ ] ɛ 533.89 1874.12 [æ] 647.68 1833.03 [ ] ɑ 748.83 1108.30 [ ] ɔ 693.34 904.86 [ ] ʊ 569.40 1122.54 [u] 370.10 1481.79 Repeat the process for the files for vowels-2 vowels-2 :
LING 3060: Phonetics & Phonology Vowel F1 F2 [i] 396.48 2508.04 [ ] ɪ 523.79 2139.39 [ ] ɛ 598.35 1946.49 [æ] 633.33 1903.04 [ ] ɑ 670.25 1256.18 [ ] ɔ 618.07 1145.03 [ ] ʊ 581.98 1119.32 [u] 399.08 1706.01 4. Create vowel plots for the speaker based on your measurements. a. Open the file vowels.xlsx in Microsoft Excel. b. Fill in the F1 and F2 values for the speakers (Vowels 1 and 2). Double check: Did you put F1 and F2 values in the correct columns? Did you put the values for the correct word in each row? c. Look at your vowel plots: If you’ve entered the data correctly, then the tab at the bottom of the sheet labeled “Vowels 2” should contain a scatterplot with points. d. Make the plots pretty. Add vowel labels (Hint: Right-click on a data point, add data labels, and then edit the text of each label to show the vowel instead of the formant value.), adjust the axes to zoom in on your data, etc. e. When you are satisfied with your plots, copy & paste them into a Word document. You can make them smaller, as long as they are readable. f. Make sure to save your Excel file. Record and measure your own speech in the Linguistics Lab (120A Gilbert Hall) 5. Sign up for a 15-minute time slot to do your recording using this Calendly site . a. Either bring a USB flash drive, or expect to receive the recording via email. b. With the help of a lab assistant, prepare to record in a soundproof booth. c. Record yourself reading the words from vowels-2 . 6. Follow Step 4 (above) with your sound file to measure your formant values . Your vowels :
LING 3060: Phonetics & Phonology Vowel F1 F2 [i] 391.42 2858 [ ] ɪ 544.56 2263.11 [ ] ɛ 763.44 2064.60 [æ] 901.24 1676.56 [ ] ɑ 861.99 1262.88 [ ] ɔ 835.16 1337.94 [ ] ʊ 621.59 1284.60 [u] 371.15 1548.5 In the vowels.xlsx file, type your formant values into the columns marked “Your Vowels.” 7. Look at your vowel plot: If you’ve entered the data correctly, then the tab “Your Vowels” should contain a scatterplot with points. 8. When you have made your own vowel plot pretty (as in 5, above), copy & paste your own vowel space plot into the Word document with your other two plots. 9. In your Word document, write two paragraphs comparing the three vowel spaces to one another. a. Do you think the Vowels 1 and Vowels 2 speakers speak the same variety of English? (Do they have the same accent?) Why or why not? b. What is your vowel space like? How is it similar to or different from the other two? Are your vowels in the same places, or different places? Why do you think they might be similar or different? 10. Do you have any feedback on the lab portions of HW #3 and #4? (Were they helpful/unhelpful? Why? Are there possible improvements?) What to turn in: - This handout, including all formant values (Vowels 2, Your Vowels) - A printed copy of your Word document, including two vowel space plots and a response to the questions in (10). - Please staple everything together and write your name on the first page if you turn this in physically! What you’re graded on: - The accuracy of formant measurements for both speakers - The correctness and formatting of both vowel plots - The depth, detail and insightfulness of your written comparison of vowel spaces
