2 Language Development Activity Semantics is the understanding of word meanings and the relationship between words. Children semantics development is a gradual process beginning just before the child says their first word and incudes a wide range of word types. (Development milestones references) Semantic development is the part of childhood language development during which children assign meaning to words and are able to compare words to other words. It begins before children know how to speak or read. (Team, 2022) In order to acquire the semantics of a language, a child must do three things: first, they must identify the relevant linguistic items, second, they must identify (and understand) the meanings these link to, and third, they must learn how the forms connect to the meanings. (Wagner, 2010) When a child hears a word for the first time, he tries to understand the meaning using past experience, intellect, memory, etc. Children of up to one year old know the meaning of 50 to 100 words and their vocabulary grows rapidly from there. (Team, 2022)
