Clinical Field Experience
C: Cultural Competence
During this field experience I spoke with Ms. Handel and discussed how she
supported and celebrated diversity within instruction.
She stated that she makes sure that
questions and examples include all different names and ethnicities.
In order to leverage
home language and cultural assets she allows students to show mastery of skills in their
native language when the paraprofessional that is fluent in Spanish is present at school.
Ms.
Handel said that she shows responsiveness to the different needs of her students by getting to
know her students, their cultures, needs, experiences, and understanding if they have an
Individualized Education Plan and its requirements.
The understanding of the needs of
students in establishing classroom routines and procedures is done through deciding these
expectations at the beginning of the year as a class.
If they need to be adjusted then that is
done by the teacher throughout the year.
However, she likes to have the students included
when setting them up first.
Ms. Handel and I continued to discuss the students and their
needs into depth specifically discussing one student that has not passed the ACCESS test,
whom is a Senior with an IEP, although is graduating in December.
This student does not
struggle with English as a second language, even though they speak Spanish at home, but
does struggle with a learning disability.
The rest of my field experience time was spent working with the Senior previously
mentioned working on their academic needs in Math.
We continued to work on learning unit
rates and I provided her much needed one on one instruction by explaining what it was and
how to do it.
This involved providing visual examples of fake food and asking her how
much each item cost.
The easiest way that I could do it with the supplies provided was a box
of Ramen noodles and a pack of 12 Ramen noodles.
She took the price that was given for the
pack of 12 Ramen noodles and divided by 12, and then compared it to the single item, while
determining the unit price and the overall best price.
This experience will affect my future practice by making me a better understanding
teacher of cultures and students’ individual needs.
I will use this experience to ensure that
my students have the best education that I can provide by making sure that I know their
needs while teaching a lesson.
I will demonstrate cultural understanding and promote
language development in my classroom by researching cultures of my students and trying to
use their native language as much as possible.
This may include using a Google translator or
any person within the building that speaks the language of my students.
