He says that those who belong to groups with a strong sense of identity have a positive view of themselves and their participation within a larger society. They will also perform well in U.S schools.
3. What does Dr. Jiménez say about a “foundation” for students?

Dr. Jimenez says that everything the students will learn is built on a foundation that native Ell speakers do not have and cannot bring with them into the classroom setting. The foundation can be torn down or built up within the school environment. How Can I Use the Classroom Context to Support Learning?

ELL students should be immersed with their English- speaking peers as much as possible, in a variety of settings. On the other hand, it is also perfectly fine to have ELL
students who speak the same native language together and speak that language. They can relate to each other and learn together. How Can I Support Comprehension and Vocabulary?
7. What is the one activity that Dr. Jiménez says is essential to reading comprehension?

Bringing in a student’s cultural experiences and background into the classroom is extremely beneficial to developing comprehension skills. It is very important for student
to learn different cultures so they can understand they classmates. 8. What are the benefits for students of a teacher modeling oral reading?
o
A teacher modeling oral reading gives student’s an example of the reading process and increases their language proficiency, as well as their comprehension skills.
9. What is language fatigue? Is there anything that a monolingual teacher can do to help
students who experience this?
o
Language fatigue happens when the student becomes overwhelmed and burnt out with the content. Is important to remember that there is only so much a student can take in of a new language before they need a break. It is very important to review and clarify the information in a student’s native language to have a better balance.
10. What is an area of language that students gain a great deal of mileage from in their learning? (It’s also an area of language learning that students themselves identify as necessary for becoming proficient in a second language.)
o
The area of language that student’s gain a great deal of mileage from is vocabulary. This is because vocabulary is the base for learning a new language. Helps a student to make connections to other words and creates proficiency in the second language.
