Lesson 3 Assignment: Applying Piaget’s Concepts Caitlin Shea Professor Karina Arzumanova DEP2004-7: Human Growth and Development 9/19/2023
One of my learning experiences I would like to illustrate through Piaget’s concept of cognitive change is how I learned to be fluent in Spanish as a second language. I was born in the United States to American parents, but my father remarried when I was a year old to a woman from Colombia. Whenever someone asks me how I learned another language I never have a solid answer as Spanish was a language I acquired in the very early stages of my life and learned over time. The Sensorimotor Stage: Birth to Age 2 When I was a year old my father married my stepmother who’s first language was Spanish. When my stepmother moved to the United States, she would take care of me while my father was at work. As my primary caretaker, my stepmother incorporated the Spanish language into the way she interacted with me. In the sensorimotor stage, babies learn languages by observing and imitating sounds and gestures they hear from their caregivers. As I was in this environment, I began to associate certain words with objects or actions. Preoperational Stage: Ages 2 to 7 As I began to develop my language skills, I was not only able to communicate with my stepmother, but other children. When I was 5 years old, I traveled to Colombia for one month with my family for the first time. When I was there, I was able to meet my stepmother’s family which included her nieces and nephews that were around my age at the time. In the pre-
operational stage, children begin to develop skills through interaction with others and their environment. One-way children learn languages at this stage is by engaging in pretend play. Playing pretend helps practice and expand vocabulary. The Concrete Operational Stage: Ages 7-11 In the concrete operational stage children can think in a more logical way which can help improve problem solving skills. This can play into learning a second language by using logical thinking skills to understand grammar rules and sentence structures. By this stage in my life, I was able to engage in conversation, practice new vocabulary, and even read in Spanish to improve my language skills. The Formal Operational Stage: Age 11 and Beyond In the formal operational stage is when children begin to think hypothetically and critically. This is a stage where concepts topics can be easily discussed with not only other children, but adults. This stage in my life was what really solidified my Spanish language skills as I was able to have engage in conversation with family members and friends and discuss my thoughts and opinions. I was also able to engage in more complex language activities, such as reading literature in Spanish or watching movies to enhance my language proficiency. The formal operational stage was where I was truly able to delve deeper into the Spanish language and truly master it.
