EDUC 872 Week 1 DB- Knowledge and Understanding There are several different ways that people learn. Some people learn best when they are actually doing something, they learn from hands-on experiences. Other people learn best from books, they enjoy reading. Then, there are also people who learn best just by observation. They almost never read, or write, or watch videos about the lessons they are learning about. The best way is to learn by a combination of all three of these learning techniques. According to Lyons (2013) people have a preference for how they learn, however, if their preference is not honored it does not mean they are not going to learn. Knowledge and understanding are the two most fundamental concepts in everyone’s life. They both incorporate a world full of learning, analyze situations, and discovering new concepts. Each of the words have a distinctive meaning. Knowledge is the process of providing fact and information to remember. According to Brown et al. (2014) learning means acquiring knowledge and skills and knowing when and how to use them so the person is able to make sense of their experiences as they occur, and are able to use information, knowledge, and skills they have learned in the future. Understanding relates to students being able to explain concepts and procedures, undertake tasks and verify statements. Students understand concepts when they can make connections between related concepts and progressively apply them to develop new ideas, use mathematical language, symbols, diagrams and graphs to represent and communicate mathematical ideas and relationships, meaningfully describe the purpose and process of carrying out particular procedures, or apply a rule or concept to different situations. When students understand the relationship between the how and the why of the content, they have achieved an understanding of that content ( Understanding , 2020).
EDUC 872 Week 1 DB- Knowledge and Understanding According to Howard (2019) prior knowledge, is the foundation upon which all future learning is built. For students to think meaningfully about new ideas, it is necessary for them to be able to build upon what they already know. Howard (2019) also stated that throughout the evolution of the brain, the principle of sensory to action have evolved. This principle plays a major role in our understanding and learning of ideas. When acting out ideas, our understanding of the concept increases. When students were given hands-on experiences, for example bicycle wheels, and were told to explore angular momentum, it gave them a better idea of what the concept really was. With the hands-on experiences they were getting better test scores just from those experiences. This showed that the students had an understanding of the concept that has been taught. Brain imaging showed that the reason they were getting this better test scores was that the student’s sensorimotor regions in the brain were activated to a much higher extent with the hands-on experiences. The phrase “students should understand new knowledge” means that students need to understand and internalize the information that is new to them. The students understanding the knowledge is when the students focus on something and they can relate to everything. In order for students to understand new knowledge is to have them drill deeper into the information by becoming actively involved in some way so that they process the information themselves. This may differ for every topic such as read it, hear it, see it, and say it. When the student actively engages is evaluate, analyze, and interpret, which is a higher level of understanding (Brown et al., 2014). Proverbs 4:7, is very important and has a lot of meaning in our everyday life because it suggest that knowledge is an exceedingly important thing that people can have. Proverbs 4:7
