Third, reflect and ask yourself what effects/affects do these elements have on the text? Modes & Elements (i) Notice What do you notice about the elements of the mode? What stands out? Effects & Affects What effects and/or affects do these elements have on the text itself? The Visual Mode Color: use of color and bold Typography: font, size, italics, etc. Layout: how is the text formed? What is it’s layout. Consider white spaces, organization of writing, images, and headings Framing: the way figures, images are placed and aligned Perspective: the point of view of the photographer or designer Are there images, photos, figures, graphs, charts in the text? I notice warm colors and dim lighting are used. Large splashes of color are created through the lighting. The photographer hits different angles of the stage .The framing changes often. The colors and lighting have subtle changes. The use of these warm tones and lighting creates a calm ambience on the stage. The large splashes of color and light create a focus on the main performer Sade. The different angles of the stage create a connection to the viewers by giving different perspectives of the performance. This maintains the focus on the song and performer and not the stage and lighting. The Spatial Mode Organization: how are items in the text organized? How are they arranged: side by side? How many pages is the text? Alignment: how are items in the aligned and placed side by side, or on top of one another? Proximity: how close or far are The main performer Sade is placed in the middle of the stage. The rest of the band/instrumentalists are placed strategically around her. Some upstage, some downstage and some to the left and right of her. The positioning of the performance is important because they are placed in front of a crowd on a stage.

Sade’s song is calm and peaceful but the lyrics are strong and intense. Viewers can hear the strategic choices made when creating the song. The repeating chorus and placement of verses is very particular. All of these choices contribute to the video as a whole. There is so much going on in the video but Sade and the song are the main components. The Gestural Mode Body Language: how does the body communicate particular things? Facial expressions: what do these communicate? Sade’s body language while delivering the performance is relaxed, rhythmic, and angelic. She creates a persona of confidence, beauty, peace, and control through her body language. The Aural Mode Inclusion and use of noise, music, sound effects, instruments, silences, etc. How is what we hear being used to create certain effects on the text? In the video viewers can hear Sade, her background singers, her whole band of instrumentalists, and the crowd reacting and enjoying themselves.
