Final Paper – Part 2:
Self Reflection
This self-reflection is a place where I feel like I can be honest, and evaluate myself before
and after taking this class. Before taking LING 3600, I felt as if I had a very insignificant understanding of certain cultures. It’s not that I found myself being intolerant of different cultures, but I just didn’t understand the way in which various cultures lived. As a professional skier I’ve travelled all over the world, and consequently I’ve immersed myself in some pretty incredible cultures. However, skiing can only take you so far geographically, and there are parts of the world that I truly don’t understand. This class opened my mind up to cultures I had never even heard of, and I found myself moving through the Scale of Intercultural Sensitivity throughout the semester.
As I wrote in my first paper, having knowledge of different cultures is not enough, and it’s important to gain a greater understanding of the cultures around us. The U.S. represents one of the first “multicultural nations” (Samovar et al., 2015, p. 164) in the world, and this creates an opportunity to mesh different cultures together – creating a more diverse society. Whether it’s greetings, introductions, business protocols, dress, food, punctuality, gender issues, or important holidays – many things can be learned from the cultures around us (Samovar et al., 2015, p. 238) When referring to the Scale of Intercultural Sensitivity, I’ve found myself moving through the ethnorelative side of the scale and into the adaptation stage. Hopefully one day I’ll find myself in
the integration stage, and I’ll be able to accept other cultures as part of my own. It starts with

each individual person, but if everyone can get to this stage – or at least close to it – then America will be a much more diverse and well-off society. Referring back to my first paper, something as mundane as food could be enough to bring different cultures together. In addition to this, it would create the chance to have a greater variety of food in America!
