Heritage Language Learners
Heritage language learners have a unique experience as they navigate between their
heritage language and the dominant language of their country. Various factors, including
community, family, and friends, shape their language acquisition journey and understanding
of cultural identity. The experiences of heritage language learners will be explored, focusing
on how the cultural connection does not rely solely on language.
Community
Heritage language learners often feel a sense of connection to their cultural
community. This connection is not solely based on language but also shared values,
traditions, and experiences. The artistic community provides heritage language learners with
a sense of belonging and support, which can positively impact their language acquisition
journey. According to a Pew Research Center study, Hispanics describe their identity in
various ways, with many emphasizing their cultural heritage and connections to their
community (Pew Research Center, 2020).
Family
Family plays a crucial role in the language acquisition journey of heritage language
learners. A heritage language is often passed down from generation to generation within
families, and language use can reinforce cultural identity (The Daily Texan, 2021). Family
members can provide a supportive and immersive environment for language learning and a
source of motivation and pride for heritage language learners.
Friends
Friends can also play a significant role in the language acquisition journey of heritage
language learners. Friends with the same cultural background can provide an environment
where heritage language use is encouraged and normalized. Additionally, friends can provide
social support and a sense of belonging, positively impacting language acquisition.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the cultural connection of heritage language learners does not rely
solely on language. Community, family, and friends all play a significant role in shaping the
language acquisition journey and understanding the cultural identity of heritage language
learners.
