Section 12: Review Questions - Explain how organizing limits competition for player jobs. How doe organized player associations counteract owner powers? Organizing limits competition for player jobs it taught players about organization, something valuable, limiting competition for jobs. On the other hand, it also counteracted owner power by organizing unions. Unions are protected by law, and owners must respect that. They also teach players about potential owner exploitations. Unions were the key to counteracting owner power. Section 12: Review Questions - What rights do players forfeit when they choose a collective bargaining agent? Why might players in a given league decertify their union? The right that a player forgoes when they choose a collective bargaining agent is the individual right to legal action. A player in a given league may want to decertify their union instead. This is because players may want to take individual action instead of collective bargaining to reach their goals better in very special situations. Section 12: Review Questions - What is the difference between a strike and a lockout? A strike is when players withhold their services to an owner, meaning they don’t play the sport for them in protest. A lockout is what an owner can respond with in this situation, they can refuse to allow them to play and show the risk of players losing their jobs. Section 13: Thought Problems - Suppose players in a given sport decertify their union. What risks do they run in doing so? There are obvious risks that come with decertifying a union for the players. This can give control back to the owners, allowing them to control and lower the salaries. It also gives the owners the power to exploitation, as the union, who once was responsible for informing on such things, now is not there to explain the exploitations by owners. They also will not be able to enforce nearly as many regulations on the owners to do what ever they want with player contracts as there will be no union to protect said contracts.
