Identify and discuss police strategies used today. Which strategy does your local law
enforcement agency use?
Two main police strategies today are proactive policing and community policing. Community
policing represents the dominant policing strategy in America, with the U.S. Department of
Justice budget request in 2017 showing that approximately 81 percent of the nation’s population
is served by law enforcement and police agencies practicing community policing (Swanson et
al., 2021, p. 37). Community policing involves building trust within their communities by
building bridges between law enforcement and those they swore to protect. Confidence is
necessary for citizens to cooperate with their government voluntarily, and such collaboration is
the lifeblood of adequate public safety strategies (Potts, 2021). Community policing has evolved
dramatically in the years since its implementation, and as mentioned previously, it takes many
different forms across agencies; it remains essential to see the genesis of community policing in
order to understand how the concept is relevant to today’s police organizations (Swanson et al.,
2021, p. 42). Another great strategy used by law enforcement is proactive policing. Being a law
enforcement officer, our agency promotes proactive policing, which is about preventing crime,
not reacting to it. To be effective at proactive policing, officers must anticipate crime and
disorder before it happens using a detailed problem analysis to pinpoint crime patterns and the
surprisingly small network of people and places responsible for most violence. Patrolling
proactively between 911 calls for service and embracing several strategies, such as patrolling hot
spot areas, can help to deter and even catch criminals before they can accomplish their goals
(Potts, 2021). Policing has and will continue to involve over time, and many more improvements
and strategies will prove helpful for more effective law enforcement.
