. Please discuss the ways in which you feel these policies (Module 3) have impacted Indigenous
people and their communities.
These policies have impacted Indigenous people and their communities in a negative
way. The Potlatch Law (a part of the Indian Act) had banned potlatches. This was one of the
most significant events for coastal First Nations in the west, which served to mark significant
events as well as play a significant part in wealth distribution. The potlatch Law impacted the
communities as it stopped them from being able to continue passing down their items causing
conflict in their system they had put in place. The Indian agents arrested 50 people, sending 22
people to jail. The Indian agents also confiscated many potlatch items.
Gender discrimination had not allowed women to have their Aboriginal rights. Overall
whoever the women would marry or if she were to be widowed she would lose her rights
whereas if a man were to get married to a non Indian man he would be able to keep all his
Aboriginal rights. This caused Indigenous women to be impacted in a negative way as they were
being discriminated against. The Indigenous women had created a battle to stop the
discrimination and took the case to court.
The white paper policy wanted to reach equality it had proposed to remove the indian affairs
leading them to become just like other Canadian citizens. The vast majority of Aboriginal people
in Canada who believed that blending into Canadian society was not the best way to attain
equality opposed this "white paper" concept. The white paper policy seems to have led the
Aboriginal people to feel discriminated against since the policy basically proposed to take away
their communities and to just become one with the canadians.
In conclusion, communities and people were affected by the polices mentioned.
Communities were not able to host their potlatches due to the Potlatch Law and Aboriginal
women were discriminated against due to gender discrimination leading them to lose their
Aboriginal rights. The white paper policy also did not allow the Aboriginal people to feel
comfortable as well as it impacted their communities.
2. What is your understanding of the legacies of these policies in the everyday lives of
Indigenous People?
These policies have caused damage as the Indian Act is something that is forever in the
Indigenous peoples history as they lived through it. This affects the Indigenous peoples everyday
lives as the gender discrimination, potlatch law, and the white paper law affecting many
Indigenous people and their communities. As the Indigenous people worked towards regaining
their identity and their rights allowed for them to regain their power. This may have affected their
everyday lives in a negative way but is also a constant reminder that they are capable of keeping
their differences from Canadian culture as they were all able to turn down the white paper policy.
