Hi Professor and classmates,
The knowledge I had of business law before starting this course was from a Human Resources
understanding which includes employment laws, discrimination laws, and safety laws, and
OSHA regulations. My perceptions of business law and its scope have certainly changed. I did
not realize the many facets of business law: civil and criminal law, contract law, property and
landlord-tenant law, business organizations, and tort law. I have always thought of law as a
complicated subject, and after barely brushing the surface of business law, I certainly have a
higher level of respect for lawyers! This course has also helped to expand my vocabulary.
Learning the different business structures and the owner's personal liability within each sector
was helpful and practical. I don't know many people who have not dreamt about working for
themselves one day, but they must research and choose the right option for them: sole
proprietorship, partnership, corporation, LLC, etc...
After learning about contract law and how verbal contracts can be legally binding in certain
circumstances, I believe that I will be more personally and professionally mindful of what I agree
to and say! I am working on a business degree, and I think that the knowledge I gained from this
class can keep me safe working in a corporate setting. Knowing right from wrong and that I can
also be held liable for not doing my due diligence to ensure things are being legally conducted is
a huge personal advantage. I will undoubtedly be mindful of forced arbitration agreements in my
professional life. I also have a broader understanding of the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission's role in enforcing laws to prohibit employment discrimination, which will be useful
if I ever find myself in a Human Resources role again.

Hi,
I agree that HIPPA and workplace harassment are important aspects of business law. I recall the
obligations of entities under HIPAA are generally thought of as links in a chain of liability. The
most notable fact that stands out in my memory is that business associates can face HIPPA
violations for taking any retaliatory action against any individual or other person for filing a
HIPAA complaint. (Newtek, 2021) So many people avoided reporting violations out of fear of
retaliation, so this rule is important.
Understanding that Business Law is an area that empowers our economy helped me connect how
the law relates to business operations and processes. Also, as a person who has always dreamt of
owning my own business someday, having a basic familiarity with business and financial
concepts that regularly arise in a business enterprise is practical. Also, I understand that I cannot
develop a business strategy without considering laws, regulations, and the economic impacts of
decisions. The knowledge from the course will assist me in ensuring that my business runs
smoothly and enable me to recognize and appreciate legal requirements. An article published by
the University of Texas at Austin explains how an economy cannot run smoothly without the
effective rule of law. Without regulations for businesses, economic volatility occurs. (Kortsha,
2022)

Hi,
Thank you for mentioning IRAC in your post. I forgot that the course covered this topic, which
was one of the most interesting lessons this term in my opinion. Learning the structure of legal
analysis did help me with the final project submission. Additionally, I also have no experience
with trusts or wills as my family members have not created these. I am looking into having a will
written up in the near future, as this course has helped me understand the importance of such a
legal document.
Although I wish to avoid any litigations in the future, the information provided over the last eight
weeks definitely will be helpful if the event arises. Additionally, the fact that a contract does not
need to be signed makes me think twice about everything I say. So many business relationships
have been ruined based on the assumption that unless you sign an agreement, it's not enforceable
by law. Furthermore, I did not understand the difference between a copyright and a trademark.
When researching patent information during the course, I discovered copyright refers to creative
work, while trademarks are anything that distinguishes your products and services from
competitors. (Chang, 2022) Therefore, if something is copyrighted, it is not protected by
trademark legislation, as the two are ultimately different categories of intellectual property
protection.
