1 FOR 560 Module 2: Assignment
2 The idea of research being the focus on the forensic aspect is important and has been controversial, especially with the recommendations from both NAS (2006) and PCAST (2016). The NAS report focus on how to fix certain issues within forensic science, such as bringing in new technologies, or even looking at new advances (Vossbrink, 2024). Similar to the NAS report, PCAST focuses on the statistics part of forensic, mainly trying to dismiss any errors that are reoccurring in the laboratory (Vossbrink, 2024). Forensic science, including the scientists, lab staff, and law enforcement, etc, need to figure out what needs to be done in order to gain justice. There’s too many people putting their aspects and point of views on this topic of the current difficulties forensic is facing. The idea of research being the focus is important in order to to lead towards a cure for errors that are being brought up during research in the labs. Errors in the crime labs can lead to more serious consequences, especially for the police department, causing controversy and losing citizens trust on the reliability of their crime lab. Forensic science in today’s generation should not be focused on the law, but simply on the idea of science being brought in the solve crimes and to bring justice for those who can’t seek justice for themselves. In order to gain the trust back due to errors reoccurring in the laboratory, there needs to be transparency within the laboratory. Each labs should recognize their mistakes, instead of trying to cover up certain evidence or buried any mistakes, as if it did not happen (Koehler, 2011). Laboratories should start informing others, instead of making records private, such as making documents or file public information instead of having an individual request those files. The labs standard operating procedures, accreditation certifications, or even validation studies should all be included. There’s various disciplines that are responding to the idea of research being a focus on the idea of forensic, such as having a mandatory code of ethics in the lab and to remove any practices that are unethical. There should be mandatory certification for scientists who process or
3 analyze evidence for the court, with accreditation for all forensic labs for processing those evidence (Koehler, 2011). More crime labs are hiring civilians, instead of law enforcement to work in the crime scene investigation department, to take away the bias about police officers having access to evidence being brought in, this will also create trust within citizens. There’s numerous of problems that forensic is facing, but with this idea of forensic labs acknowledging their errors and mistakes, also with the various of disciplines within forensic, there needs to be certain standards held within each laboratory. Certain pieces of evidences has been considered unreliable in the past due to the lack of research, there’s a need of reliability with accuracy in results, for any research being done in the forensic laboratory.
