Criteria
Unit code and name BSBINS301 | Develop and use information literacy skills
Part 1: Scenario 1
Have you downloaded the Workbook for this unit? Please go to the TEAMS channel for BSBINS301 then ‘Files’ then ‘Learning Resources’. Download the Workbook and you will have
access to the unit content in a word document which will help you through this assessment. The scenario
You are a library assistant at a library for example Azure Beach Public Library
(ABPL). One day a customer, Nicola Parras, comes to the information desk asking for help with the research they are doing on the famous former Australian cricketer Sir Donald Bradman. Nicola has requested that any contact be with her via mail as they have lost their phone and are without access to the internet.

Question 1
Conduct a reference interview with Nicola to better understand the information requirement and the outcomes they are needing. The reference interview should be approximately 5 minutes in duration and will need to be recorded as a role play and submitted to your Teacher/Assessor for marking. This role play will require the following roles:
Library assistant (student)
Customer, Nicola Parras
Look at the unit content about Reference Interviews
to help with this task:
Reference Interview on p15 – 16 of the Workbook
The State Library NSW Reference Excellence
training also overviews the Reference Interview if you need further help with putting together your Role Play: https://wiki.libraries.nsw.gov.au/doku.php?
id=module_2_reference_interview_skills_and_question_types_ref-ex
Question 2
Through the reference interview you learned that Nicola Parras is interested in finding a book that will provide information on both Donald Bradman’s life and career. Nicola confirmed that they are a member of the State Library of NSW so their preference is to be able to get a book from there.
Access the State Library of NSW
catalogue (Long URL: https://collection.sl.nsw.gov.au) and answer the following questions
a)
Identify and list the keywords you should use for searching the catalogue to help with
this information search? List a minimum of two keywords. b)
What other information sources could you suggest to Nicola that would help with the
search? List a minimum of two other information sources.
c)
What advanced search techniques could you use to narrow your search for Nicola? List a minimum of two advanced search techniques.
Look at p23-24 of the Unit Workbook to help with keyword searching. Remember to fit the sources to the type of information request. Where else could you search for reputable information on this person? See p24 -26 of the Workbook for information about advance search techniques.
d)
Access the State Library of NSW catalogue and conduct a search using both simple key word search and at least one advanced technique. Take a screenshot of your two searches and paste them in the space provided.
Question 3:
Based on your advanced word search, evaluate the search results against your needs. Comment on why these sources may or may not be appropriate given the information provided by Nicola. Question 4:
Follow the ABPL Information Services Policy,
or as advised by your teacher, and identify the most appropriate way to respond to this customer with the search results. Provide your response to the customer in the selected format in the space provided. (Long URL: https://share.tafensw.edu.au/share/file/b5b52f4b-216b-473a-bf3e-60658163ef7a/1/

Remember that most catalogues also have ‘help’ files that can assist with searching. State Library NSW Catalogue Search Tips and Tricks: https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/research-and-collections/catalogue-search-tips-and-tricks
What did you find? Would these resources be useful for Nicola? Review the request in the
scenario, make sure you are answering the customer’s question. How would you evaluate your search results? Remember, you can use one of the methods in the unit content for example CAPOW (page 33 of the Workbook). The TAFE LibGuide link given in the Workbook is also helpful here: https://tafensw.libguides.com/research/evaluating

Part 2: Scenario 2
The scenario
You are a library assistant at Bankstown College Library and you are approached by a customer Trent Davies seeking information on what resources the library has available by author Mem Fox. Specifically, they are seeking the following titles:
‘Possum Magic’
‘A Giraffe in the Bath’
The customer has provided you with their email address, seeking a response within 24 hours
(
trent.davies@outlook.com
).
Question 1
Using the TAFE NSW Library Network Catalogue
and selecting Bankstown College Library in your search criteria, identify how many titles the Bankstown College Library has by author Mem Fox. (Long URL: https://tafecat.tafensw.edu.au/tafecat.html)
Question 2:
Further evaluate the search results. Does the Bankstown College Library have both books that Trent is seeking?
For this question you need to look at the Policy and decide how you will respond to the customer. What does the policy recommend? Remember to check the details in the scenario as well. When you have chosen your method of communication put your response to the customer in this box. This is a straightforward search. Put the number of titles in this box.
Question 3:
Prepare the text to be included in an email back to Trent Davies presenting your findings. Ensure you include the details of your search and whether you found the two books Trent was seeking at Bankstown College Library.
Part 3: Scenario 3
To complete this part of the assessment, you must participate in a practical activity that will demonstrate your ability to complete skills-based tasks to industry standards. Your responses will be used as part of the overall evidence requirements of the unit.
You should refer to the list of criteria in the assessment checklist to understand what you need to demonstrate in this section of the assessment. This checklist outlines the assessment criteria used to assess your performance.
Once completed, submit this assessment and the tasks and activities you are required to complete to your Teacher/Assessor for marking.

and look at the Template: Email
document.
Hi,
I’m hoping you can help me! It’s my Grandmother’s 90th birthday coming up in a few months and I’d love to make the family’s favourite biscuits for the celebrations. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the name of the biscuits but I do know that the recipe is in ‘The Big book of beautiful biscuits’ that was created by the Australian Women’s Weekly in 1982.
I’d love to find a copy of the book and I’m happy to travel to get it! Can you please point me in the
right direction?
Thanks in advance,
Cara Question 1:
Outline the purpose of your search and the outcomes required based on the scenario. Question 2
Using the TAFE NSW Library Network Catalogue
conduct a search for ‘Beautiful Biscuits’ and summarise the search results (title, author and year). (Long URL: https://tafecat.tafensw.edu.au/tafecat.html)
Question 3:
Further evaluate the search results and present your findings as to where the customer may be able to find copies of ‘The Big book of beautiful biscuits’ by the Australian Women’s Weekly.
All the information you need here is in the scenario. Hint: There is more than one result for this search. Make sure you do the exact search in the question; you need to find all
the results for this
search and list them here. How many copies are available of the exact book the customer is looking for? Where are they located?

Question 5:
Prepare the text for an email to respond to the customer to present your findings.
Part 4: Scenario 4
The scenario
You have just completed your first three months as a library assistant at a library for example the Azure Beach Public Library (ABPL). You are really enjoying your time at ABPL but
it hasn’t been without its challenges. Last week you provided a customer, Sharon Chambers with the wrong research summary. Sharon had asked you to perform a search on King Henry VIII but in error you provided her with a summary on Bengal Tigers that was meant for a different customer. You receive the following email from your supervisor Pablo:

Your first three months
Have a look at the policy and outline, directly from the policy, how you should let the customer know what you have found. See section 10.7 in particular. Choose a method of communicating with the customer based on the scenario. Again, remember to include an email signature under your name.
Hi,
Congratulations – three months has flown by since you started with us! You’ve been such a breath of fresh air at ABPL and we’re so glad that you started with us. I like to meet with staff every 3 – 6 months to discuss their professional development and areas of focus of the coming period.
I know you made a bit of an error when you provided the wrong information to Sharon Chambers last week; don’t worry, every mistake is a learning opportunity in disguise. Prior to our catch up, could you please reflect on the experience and consider what you could do differently in the future? Looking forward to catching up.
Pablo
Question 1:
Evaluate your performance and skills based on the feedback from Pablo. Outline what went wrong.
Question 2:
Based on your response to Part 4, Question 1, identify opportunities where you could improve.
Well done – you are at the end of the assessment
Remember to read your feedback document after your work is marked. Any questions? Please email the unit facilitator: Sarah Fearnley
Td.librarycourses@tafensw.edu.au
Review Topic 4: Develop own information literacy skills
for help with these two questions. The Kolb Reflective Cycle mentioned on p69 of the Workbook may help here.
