Scenario overview
A local music shop, Holistic Music, has been operating in the area for many years selling music and musical instruments. Over the past six months the owner, Lowanna Brown, has noticed fewer customers coming into the store and recently found out that a popular chain of music stores has opened up in the neighbouring suburb. Lowanna is hoping to promote the shop’s products and services using social media to increase the number of customers coming to the shop to buy goods. Lowanna recently contacted you to help develop the shop’s social media presence.
You received an email from Lowanna Brown with the following text:
Thank you for agreeing to help me – as you now know, the shop has been in the family for the past three generations and I really want to see it succeed.
Holistic Music has typically grown through word of mouth. Our collection of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples music is the largest in the region and this has been a big
drawcard - maybe we could promote this more actively. Last week I had an idea about running musical evenings in our courtyard with some of the local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples artists to promote new works!
Document title: ICTWEB306_AE_Sk2of2
To be honest, I barely use social media. A few years ago, I set up an Instagram account which
I occasionally use to upload images of the shop when new products come in. I also have a LinkedIn profile but hardly log in and only have 15 connections who I barely know!
My objectives in building the business’ social media presence are to:
increase the number of customers visiting the shop to buy products
strengthen the brand by showcasing our range of music produced by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples
draw in customers by providing the musical events showcasing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples musicians
make it easy for our customers (or potential customers) to connect with us in order to ask questions and provide reviews of us – this could help with word-of-mouth marketing of the business.
I don’t want anything too complicated or time consuming. Can you please provide me with recommendations? Don’t forget to explain any jargon!
Part 1: Scenario 1
Your first step is to write an email to Lowanna providing a simple explanation of social media. Also, you will need to review and discuss social media applications and tools that you believe could meet Lowanna’s requirements. Include the following in your email (300 - 400 words):
1.
Explain the term ‘social media’. Provide two
characteristics of social media.
2.
List three
ways social media could assist Holistic Music.
3.
Explain two
possible issues to be aware of when using social media. For each issue, provide one guideline to follow aimed at preventing these problems.
4.
List three
types of social media applications and three
types of social media tools that could be useful for Holistic Music. (Note: Ensure all social media tools support the use of RSS feeds.) Explain what is meant by a social media application and a social media tool.
Write your email in the space provided.
