What is IDEA?
IDEA is a federal law under the U.S. Department of Education that guarantees rights of children exceptionalities to a free and public education. 12 Key Components of IDEA
Term
Explanation
Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
Any individual is entitled to a free and public education and other services that meets their needs.
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
Evaluate student’s needs. Students with disabilities should have full access to the education curriculum and environment.
Referral Process Parent or school administration referral. It is the parent to consent to allow proper evaluations and assessments.
Evaluation Process
Generally for accurate results assessments and evaluations should be assessed within 60 days after first initial assessment. Eligibility Determination
Once assessments have been conducted then
it will allow results to be provided as to what the student would be eligible for. IEP Components
The components would consist of meetings with parents and school administration when
scheduled, assessments for the child per 90 days or as needed.
Parent and Student Involvement
Parents and students should be involved in the process to be aware of next steps in the process.
Quarterly Progress Monitoring
The monitoring process would be seeing how well the services selected are helping the student and if improvements are progressing as they should.
Annual Review Process
Parents and school administration should conduct a annual meeting to review assessments and progress made and discuss next steps of services being provided. Procedural Safeguards
Safe and proper recommendations should be
considered to properly provide correct services that the student seeking services receives what will help meet their needs.
Prior Written Notice
If a student has been receiving services a prior written notice would be ideal to have to pass along to those that are currently
working on assessments to provide additional services.
Related Services
If current services being provided are not meeting needs, the parents and school administration can seek additional related services to help with their child’s needs.
