From module one, I chose to lean into the healthcare industry for my
focus. The open systems interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual
model created by the International Organization for Standardization
which enables diverse communication systems to communicate using
standard protocols. In plain English, the OSI provides a standard for
different computer systems to be able to communicate with each other
(Cloudfare, 2024). Typically, the 7th layer, the application layer is a huge
deal for the healthcare system. This is where the user uses the
application for an end goal. The application layer is the software
end-users typically interact with. It is the actual applications that use the
network. For medical device security, this layer is usually deemed the
most vulnerable and would involve implementing access control
measures. These ensure that only authorized users can access medical
device applications such as firmware updates and password
management. An example of a control measure would be a login
required to use a software. This ensures that the software cannot be
easily controlled by remote (Tech Nation, 2023).
This layer provides a way for users to access critical data when it comes
to healthcare records or EHR's. A patient might have a few platforms
that are needed to communicate with healthcare professionals as well as
obtain test results. On my journey to become healthier for me and my
family, I have had to go through various tests, treatments and surgeries.
One of the reasons that we've made the progress that we have is made
possible from the application layer. By having access and interacting
with multiple applications, I was able to get down to the bottom of my
health and continue to make improves for not just me but my wife and
kid as well. Healthcare is a messy process to figure out, having a form of
communication makes it less complicated. Each layer of the OSI has its
merits in various industries, its when these layers interact with one
another is when the model truly succeeds.
