Community Organization
Community organizations are organizations that focus on improving the wellbeing and social connections needed for a community to function properly. It’s a group of people that come
together to focus on addressing issues that matter to them and to also better the community by focusing on the same goals. The community organizations aim to create change by educating youths at a young age to live a lifestyle that can set examples for future generations. Some examples of Community organizations are 4-H, neighborhood organizations, and many more. S. Fawcett (2023) stated, “
Although organizations may exist to promote interest in an issue, such as
child hunger, little will happen until a significant number of people care about the issue and feel that their actions can make a difference”.
American Red Cross
The American Red Cross was founded in 1881 by a nurse named Clara Barton. Clara was
a nurse during the American Civil War who served her country by risking her life to bring supplies to the soldiers in the field and by taking care of the people. Clara built an organization focusing on helping people, no matter the situation. I find this organization to be inspiring and not biased. If you are like me and you hear “American Red Cross”, I think of three things, which are: 1. the people that ask you to give blood; 2. my basic life support certification/ CPR card; and
lastly, 3. the people who show up when a disaster happens. They are all three of those things, plus so much more.
What services does the organization provide?
Unit 2 IP3
The American Red Cross provides tons of services and duties that are broken down into five categories: health and safety, disasters, armed forces, blood, and international. Each of these that I mentioned has so many types of aid services for people to utilize. Here is a quick breakdown of each service:
1.
Health and Safety Services: The key facets of the health and safety service branch
are training and preparedness education. The American Red Cross has a history of
providing people with the training needed in an effort to help save lives and strengthen communities. Some of the training provided that involves useful life skills is CPR, BLS, AED, lifeguard, babysitting, and many more. The training I mentioned above is intended to enable those who are certified to prevent, prepare for, and respond to different life threatening situations. A program that really fascinates me is Be Red Cross Ready, which is a program that teaches people the basics of being emergency prepared. It contains three steps: get a kit, make a plan,
and be informed. The program combines both health and safety services and disaster services.
2.
Disaster Services: The American Red Cross has always been there to help people cope in times of need during disasters like hurricanes, fires, and floods. Disaster relief doesn't only focus on urgent disaster responses but also on prevention and preparation. When a disaster happens, the local caseworkers and the Disaster Action Teams are stationed on site at the shelters and also at the local American Red Cross to help assist those affected by providing them with food, care, and basic resources needed to recover. They also promote awareness efforts by

educating local communities on how they can be prepared in the event of an emergency.
3.
Armed Services: In this particular service, the American Red Cross focuses on veterans, active duty/service members, and their families. The American Red Cross is responsible for providing active duty personnel and the national guard/reserves with humanitarian service and resources. These services are available for military installations in the United States and around the world. The American Red Cross plays an active role in advocating for veterans to get their benefits by utilizing the community based programs and representation before the Board of Veterans Appeals. Emergency communication services the American Red Cross provides help unite families with the armed forces by connecting military hospitals, providing assistance in healthcare facilities, and many more.
4.
Blood Services: I have to say that this is one of the five services the American Red Cross provides that is well-known and is the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross blood service provides a life saving supply of blood to different hospitals, blood transfusion centers, and medical facilities each day. In order for the American Red Cross to meet the demands of patients in need, they rely on blood drives and blood donation centers. 5.
International Service: The American Red Cross volunteers deploy to different locations internationally when disasters arise to provide assistance to those that are affected. 180 other national American Red Cross organizations partner with
Unit 2 IP5
the Red Crescent societies to provide emergency health services, external disaster responses, and volunteer networks internationally.
What types of people does it target?
The American Red Cross targets a variety of people of all ages with different backgrounds and for multiple different reasons. When it comes to donating for the cause, it targets middle class and upper class employed adults in the age group of 25 to 60 years old. Targeted blood donors, or should I say in demand, are type O negative and positive but are willing to take any blood type due to the shortage of blood. When it comes to volunteers, the American Red Cross targets people with empathy whose passions are to help the people in need in the age group of 18 to 60 years old. When it comes to helping those in need, the American Red Cross doesn’t have a preference or targeted population because they will help people in their
time of need.
List 2–3 goals that the organization has to impact the community.
The list of goals that I came up with that the American Red Cross has to impact communities are:
1.
The American Red Cross’s goal as an organization is to help people by empowering people to help others.
2.
To prevent and alleviate human suffering during times of emergencies and disasters by providing help.
I am sure there are many other goals that the American Red Cross would like to achieve that are not listed above, but the two that I mentioned above are ones that stood out to me and that I put into my own words after learning what the organization had to offer.
