IDS 150 Project Template Part One: Sustainable Practices Describe how environmental systems in use in your chosen scenario impact human behavior. The environmental systems in the Business scenario such as the atmosphere and the earth mined, impact human behavior because both are important to sustainable practices within mining. Industrial mining depends on the use of numerous machineries. All of which use fossil fuels to work, and a lot of it. This obviously may have adverse effects on the atmosphere so it is important to keep in mind that it may leave an impact. Ways to soothe this are to invest in planting more trees in the area after the operation is complete. Describe the impact of the current resource use on the environment. The resource use of industrial mining is serious and impactful to the environment. The minerals mined will take millions of years to reform if not longer so that alone is extremely unsustainable. The use of fossil fuels within operations also impacts the atmosphere and with enough prolonged mining in a certain area it could adversely affect the local environment. Describe how human ideology impacts behavior regarding the environmental systems. Human ideology impacts behavior regarding the environmental systems within mining often. The main one being social justice. This is often seen with mining in certain areas important to indigenous people. These areas are typically off limits to mine, so this is obviously a major impact on behavior. Typically, a mineral rich environment would be perfect, but this human ideology impacts that decision. Explain the role of cultural bias in your chosen group’s approach to global sustainability. Cultural bias certainly affects the approach to global sustainability. An important one would be where the group is based and what kind of competition do they face. Some decisions may vary given how mining is received in the local area. Some places across the globe rely on mining to survive so it is important to identify the growth of the company and where they started to then examine their cultural bias. This is also important because some places have very different regulations on mining. So, the mining company may abuse some places with more lenient regulations. Part Two: Profile Describe the value of sustainability practices in human and environmental systems. Sustainability practices are crucial for the longevity of both human and environmental systems. To begin, sustainability practices advocate for the overall preservation of our environments. This is clear because these practices aim to minimize damage to the environment through reducing pollution, mitigating habitat loss, and conserving natural resources. All of these together ensure the preservation of biodiversity which is essential for life to thrive. Human systems are also impacted by sustainability practices because sustainability initiatives bring innovation and boost the economy through new jobs and industries. All these benefits are apparent in addition to the good these sustainability initiatives bring to the environment. Explain the relationship between sustainable systems and human equity in the context of the related profile. Sustainable practices within industrial mining can benefit human equity greatly. A main concern with industrial mining comes from the place in which they decide to mine. If these places are populated with communities, then their daily lives may be disrupted. So sustainable mining practices promote

compensation to these communities, equitable share of revenues, and transparency. A group often harmed by unsustainable mining practices are indigenous peoples. So, the inclusive decision making brought from sustainable mining practices should address historical inequalities such as this and empower these communities. Describe how conflict resolution is used in the profile to support sustainability. Conflict resolution is mainly seen in industrial mining when an operation within the company disrupts a local community and or a local environment. Conflict resolution is extremely important for both scenarios because harm to either is a serious threat to sustainability. If the company damages the local environment steps will be taken to support this environment after operations are complete. This could include planting more trees in the area or supporting and working cohesively with a local environmental advocacy group. For local communities conflict resolution is used to dispute rights over the land mined and access to those resources. This obviously supports sustainability as well because it shows transparency within the company, and it ensures local communities are included in decision making. Explain how cultural systems relate to sustainability within the profile. As stated previously, many mining operations take place in areas often inhabited by indigenous communities. These communities and a mutual relationship with them can promote sustainability within an industrial mining company. This is mainly because these communities know a lot more about the land and its resources. An inclusive relationship with these communities can provide an insight into better strategies to accomplish sustainable mining. This will ensure the company remains both socially and environmentally responsible when it comes to sustainability. By involving cultural considerations into any decisions made within the company such as heritage preservation and community engagement it reveals the importance cultural systems play in sustainability. Part Three: Actionable Steps Explain why sustainability improvement is needed in your chosen group. Sustainability improvement is essential in industrial mining due to the major social, economic, and environmental impacts industrial mining can harbor. Industrial mining often leads to a loss of biodiversity due to many factors such as water pollution, soil erosion, and destruction to the landscape. Unsustainable mining will almost always lead to irreversible damage to the local environment and atmosphere through the significant emissions of greenhouse gases as well. This also has a global impact considering unsustainable mining has a big role in climate change through the mass usage of fossil fuels and carbon emissions. Mining done unsustainably also poses a threat to communities in the area, often displacing local groups from both homes and livelihoods. These communities may face human rights abuse and economic inequality. Describe how the perspectives of the various stakeholders of your chosen group provide a context to improve sustainability practices related to the concerns of the group. The numerous stakeholders of this company all have diverse perspectives that help shape sustainability practices within the company. First off, local communities living near mining sites will often have the perspective of self-preservation. This means they will often seek involvement with local activities, fair compensation from the company, and to minimize local damage to the environment. All of these things lead to sustainable practices because engaging with these communities and seeking them out for meaningful consultation will bring sustainability socially and environmentally. Governmental and regulatory figures also have a stake in this company. Their main perspectives consist of the balance between the economy and impacts on the environment and social systems. They seek safety above all

with public health and the workers within the company. All of these perspectives help structure sustainable practices because they promote a safe environment for employees and communities affected. These perspectives also consider the economy and how it can benefit from these efforts. So, the overall wealth can be dispersed while still maintaining sustainability. Explain how cultural diversity in your chosen group can be of value in addressing sustainability issues. One of the main strengths of cultural diversity within a mining company is the diverse perspectives that are available. These numerous perspectives can give insight on tough decisions in the hope to preserve sustainability. Some perspectives may bring insight into community engagement, different sustainable development strategies, and the general discussion brought from different opinions. One of the most fruitful ways to learn about something is to have a calm and informed conversation with someone of opposed views. Cultural diversity will ensure that every claim is challenged to ensure that it is the correct decision, and this is done by the diverse views, opinions, and knowledge of different cultures. Describe actionable steps your chosen group could take for each pillar of sustainability. The Mcburrow Mining Company should address each pillar of sustainability if it seeks to be sustainable. The first pillar being addressed is environmental sustainability, this includes the mining company’s relation and interaction with the environment that surrounds them. To achieve sustainability the company should focus on reducing their carbon footprint. This is because global warming is a big concern in today’s time, and this will likely help in most aspects. This could be done by transitioning to renewable energy sources and ensuring all energy is being used efficiently. Pollution is also tied to this and should be taken just as seriously. To reduce pollution the company should develop a strong waste management system and include a cleaner production process to minimize pollution within the water and earth. Lastly, the company can implement and support projects that promote biodiversity and are even involved in habitat restoration. Next the company should address the social sustainability pillar, which will include how the company interacts with the communities affected by local mining. The most important step to take for the company would just be simple engagement with these communities and allowing their insight to affect decisions. They likely know much more about the local land than the company and their thoughts should be cherished and used. This will also promote more sustainable relationships with these communities making it easier to gain access to mining sites. This relationship with communities will also ensure that the company is being held accountable for any poor decisions made in the ways of sustainability. Finally, the company should look at economic sustainability, which will include how the company interacts with and affects the economy. The main importance in this pillar is that the company should follow ethical practices and ensure they comply with laws and regulations. Transparency is also important for the company so that they can display their contributions to the environment and also be held accountable. These will ensure the company stays responsible and in business, which in turn will impact the economy alone. However, Mcburrow Mining Company should promote the development of skills and economic initiatives, this will ensure the longevity of the company with innovation. Economic sustainability is a measure of the ability to adapt because the economy will always be changing, and markets will open and close. Staying keen on major events will help the company to stay sustainable and informed.
