Module Three Activity
A.
One of the first steps that I would take to assess the network is identifying the hosts, network, and users. I would want to have a physical inventory of what the office uses. By
getting a better understanding of what will be or what is on the network, we can see if there are any potential vulnerabilities. This will help will the overall security assessment to see the security measure that are being used to protect the network. A great way to help
with the security assessment is to use Nmap, which will scan the network, host discovery,
and allow us to do a security audit. Security audit, visibility audit, and management audit would also be useful when assessing a network because it would not only be easy for the department to access and review but it would benefit the department in the future as well.
Next step I would take is to run a performance analysis to make sure that everything is running and connected as it should be. B.
One way to account for people would be to use a network monitoring tool which will allow the company to monitor network traffic, devices, and applications. Capturing the network traffic would allow help us account for network connections being used, how
much data is being transmitted, and what type of data is being sent and received by a particular process. C.
Personally, I would say audits are tools that can help in many ways, such as providing independent assessment on how well the, IT systems are being managed, how the security resources are performing, and how well IT controls are being handled. Nmap is another tool I would use for network discovery and security auditing. Another great thing
about using Nmap is that it scans for open ports which is a vulnerability. Wireshark is another tool that can help troubleshoot the network, analyze the network, software and communication protocol development. If the network was wireless, NetSpot would help assess, scan, and survey the Wifi coverage and performance. OpenVAS is what I would use foe vulnerability management to ensure the security of the network. D.
Audits would help determine what I have already done and confirm that everything is running properly as far as security, devices, users, and performance goes. Nmap would help me with network discovery and security auditing as well as scan for open ports. NetSpot would ensure wifi is covered security wise and confirm it is running properly. OpenVAS would help make sure we don’t have any vulnerabilities with in our network.
