Week 5
Question 1 - Obtaining Baselines
The Alterrain IT Department does little server monitoring because most of its time has been
spent upgrading servers and network equipment as well as responding to user needs. You
recommend starting the proactive network and server resource efficiency initiative by
developing a plan for gathering baseline performance data on each server. Prepare a report or
slide presentation for the IT director that describes the baseline data you would gather.
Obtaining Baseline is always valuable source of statistic and reports that that would help
company to keep track on and help prevent any issues that could happened.
The following elements should be gathered:
RAM Performance
Processor Performance
HDD/SSD Performance
Network Performance
Reports about slow, average, and peak usage periods
Statistics of users that use specific software or resources
Software Performance
CPU performance
Question 2 - Using Monitoring Tools
Alterrain is hiring a new computer administrator who will have computer efficiency and
resource reliability as one of her job duties. In preparation for her arrival, the IT director asks
you to prepare an overview for her of Windows Server 2016 monitoring tools, which includes:
Task Manager
- This tool could be open by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL at same time. Also, this tool
would use monitor programs and provide information about the processes and applications
running on a computer. This tool would help you to find a process and what folder its located.
Also you can end task that is not responding and set a priority of specific process.
Processes Tab
show your active applications and services that running currently on your server
and performance about each application.
Performance Tab
display usage of your CPU, Memory, Disks, Ethernet, GPU.
App History Tab
display a usage history for each app.
Startup Tab
display apps that starts up with a computer and display they status
Users Tab
display a current users and they process that they running.
Details Tab
display every process that is running and who is running.
Services Tab
display a services and they status, could be use to change status or restart it.
Performance Monitor
- This tool could be open by right click on windows logo on left bottom
conner. This tool use to check for processor bottlenecks, such as the processor’s ability to
handle the server load and possible problems caused by hardware or it can be set for a specific
process or program or portion of the object that needs to be
monitored. Monitoring can be
done in three different styles, histogram, report, and line graph. It may include counters that
user chooses to monitor, those elements could be:
Processor/ Processor Information / Process
RAS/ RAS PORT/ RAS TOTAL
Browser
Cache
Database
TCPv4/TCPv6
PhysicalDisk
Data Collector Sets
– This tool could be found in Performance Monitor and it would help you to
create data sets that would include performance counters, event logs, and system information
that can be used to collect multiple data sets on-demand or over a period of time. Data that is
collected for performance counters by a Data Collector Set is stored in log files, which you can
open and view in Windows Performance Monitor. Data Collector Sets are having two categories,
User Defined and System. User Defined have customs sets that could contain, logs, performance
counters which is defined by administrator. System tab has automatically created sets that is
defined by the OS and applications. Those sets could be run manually or scheduled and during
run it will collect data base on settings that was made. The report will contain results of the data
collection process as any detected performance problems and information on how to correct
the problems
