Assume you have a position as database administrator in a large corporation.
The company has been collecting data about employees, including monitoring
their working habits by recording their keystrokes, timing their telephone
interactions with clients, and scanning their e-mail for personal correspondence.
As database administrator (DBA), you are asked to help establish a record-
keeping system to store such data. Does the company have a legal right to
perform this kind of monitoring? Explain your professional responsibility in this
situation. Discuss provisions within the ACM and IEEE Codes of Ethics that can
be used to guide you.
A database administrator is "responsible for maintaining, securing, and operating
databases as well as ensuring that data is correctly stored and retrieved" (Oracle,
2023). The ethical basis of keeping tabs on staff activities, like storing keystrokes,
timing phone calls, and email examination, is contingent upon confidentiality
legislation that differs according to jurisdiction. This large corporation is required to
abide by all relevant rules and laws, including the Data Protection of the EU or the US
Privacy Act. As a DBA, my job obligation in this case is to learn and promote the
moral utilization of staff information while upholding rights to confidentiality. The
ACM and the IEE created Codes of Ethics that outline these kinds of scenarios. For
instance, the Code of Ethics of the ACM in step 1.2 is to "avoid harm," and as a DBA,
I should attempt to reduce the adverse effects of systems and try to keep people safe
(The Code, 2023). The Code of Ethics of IEEE, in the third principle, states that "to
ensure this code is upheld by colleagues and co-workers" (IEEE CASS, 2023). This
principle emphasizes the value of being truthful and open when handling information,
making sure that staff members are aware of the procedures used to gather
information. Thus, it is crucial as a DBA to support open lines of communication with
staff members, get their permission when needed, and make sure that gathering data
procedures comply with legal and moral requirements.
