Lost Pines Outfitters
Description
:
Lost Pine Outfitters is a small clothing store that offers outdoor clothing both
online and at their store front location in Texas Hill County. The inventory for the company is
currently shared between the online store and their storefront location. A single warehouse is
responsible for storing all the company’s inventory, and for filling each order.
Lost Pine Outfitters Online
:LPOs current online store operates like other online retailers and
appears to be easy for their customers to navigate. Once an order is placed online, it is sent to
their warehouse where a sales associate will then pull that item, or items from the shelf. The
associate will then manually update their inventory tracking system. The fulfillment department
will package the items for delivery and assign a tracking number though the United States Postal
Service. Once the order ships out it is then the responsibility of the associate to send that
customer a thank you note, with a request for a review of their purchase. A feedback loop that is
present here is when the customer places the order.
Lost Pines Outfitters Retail Storefront

Lost Pines Outfitters storefront located in Texas
allows their customers to purchase items in person rather than online. As already mentioned, both
their online store and storefront location share the same warehouse and inventory. Each purchase
made is tracked through the company’s point of sale system. It is the manager’s responsibility
each week to collect information from retail sales and update the inventory in the company’s
warehouse database. The feedback loop presented here is when the manager gathers information
each week.
Recommendations
:
For Lost Pines Outfitters to fix some of their current issues they must
begin by correcting the issues that are happening within their warehouse. Starting with the
company’s inventory issues, and the lack of communication that exists between their inventory
database and their inventory tracking. I recommend installing a software that will allow both the
inventory from their online retail, and their storefront to be linked together, so when something is
purchased, it is automatically updated without an associate having to insure each item
individually is updated at a time. This software would allow updates to happen at checkout,
which would keep the inventory updated, and allow less mistakes to occur from the associates. It
has also been mentioned that there is a lack of computers within the company, I would
recommend they purchase more computers to have within the warehouse to allow for more work
to be done, and less time wasted waiting for a computer to open. Adding additional computers
could also allow for more sales associates to be hired, and hopefully less communication issues.

In closing, systems thinking in a business environment such as Lost Pines
Outfitters allows us to see how issues that can occur such as the ones that took place within the
company’s inventory can impact other aspects of the company. For example, if corrections are
not made within the company’s inventory they will suffer finically if they are not able to properly
keep track of their sales, and what they currently have. Issues like this one also cause bigger
problems for their customers, if they do not know what is in stock how can the customer make an
online purchase with the chance of that item being out of stock.
