FACEBOOK PRIVACY, WHAT PRIVACY? CASE STUDY-2 Toronto Metropolitan University ITM102-W23-04 5 th February 2023
CASE-2: FACEBOOK PRIVACY, WHAT PRIVACY? 1. Perform an ethical analysis of Facebook. What is the ethical dilemma presented by this case? Facebook is one of the most popular social media platforms. Facebook was on its peak during 90’s but with the passing time other social media platforms became popular. Facebook users are now mostly limited to Gen X and Y. When Facebook asks for your information to be mentioned (for example, marital status, education, hobby, which city you reside in, etc.); it is for specific reasons. By collecting all that data, the system now knows your interest and will try to show things similar to that. There are numerous advertisements going around on Facebook. Not all advertisements are shown to us, the advertisements are shown to its target market. Even when the account is private, it only stops other users from seeing your profile, but it doesn’t stop the advertisers from seeing. The ethical dilemma in this case would be utilizing inside knowledge for your own profit (CFI 2023). 2. What is the relationship of privacy to Facebook's business model? The primary way of Facebook making money is through advertisements (Johnston, 2023). Relationship of privacy to other users is noticed, but towards Facebook’s business model is quite an irony. People usually trust Facebook because of its Privacy policy, but they fail to notice that the Privacy Policy only applies to other users and to Facebook’s business model itself. For example, on marketplace if I search apple watch then the next day, we start seeing advertisements of apple watch. This is clearly because our data is being accessed by the advertiser. 3. Describe the weaknesses of Facebook's privacy policies and features. What management, organization, and technology factors have contributed to those weaknesses? Weakness of the Facebooks’ privacy policy is that people are misguided in the name of Privacy. All the users should be aware that their data is being monitored and used by the advertisers. The user should be asked for the permission if their data can be shared to third party or not (Shestakova, 2016).
One of the technology factors would be that the data does not get deleted even after the account is deleted. The company’s profit involves the selling of data for the advertisement targeting (Wikipedia, 2022). 4. Will Facebook be able to have a successful business model without invading privacy? Explain your answer. Could Facebook take any measures to make this possible? Facebook’s majorly revenue come from advertainment which needs to invade the privacy of its users. If Facebook builds transparency with its users, most users will deny the access. This will definitely not be in favour of Facebook. In my opinion, Facebook won’t be able to have a successful business model without invading privacy. REFERENCES: How Facebook (Meta) Makes Money. (n.d.).
