Objectives
Your goal in this lab is to investigate the history of computer operating systems and learn why many of
today’s operating systems share similar features. After completing this lab, you
will be able to:

Better understand the relationships among operating systems

have many similar features
because they share a common history. Some of them have a direct or indirect connection with earlier
operating systems.
Figure 1 shows some highlights of this history. The arrows indicate a direct or indirect influence from an
earlier operating system.

Microsoft and IBM of infringement when they did not use his code on their operating systems.

6. Several operating systems have appeared since the year 2000 that have evolved from Linux. List three
of them that are not listed in Figure 1 and list a primary purpose of each OS.
