Chapter 6
Read and respond to Exercises 4 and 5.
4) Using the data classification scheme presented in this chapter, identify and classify the
information contained in your personal computer or personal digital assistant. Based on the
potential for misuse or embarrassment, what information is confidential, sensitive but
unclassified, or suitable for public release?
Any information stored on my personal computer cannot be considered confidential.
Nevertheless, I maintain a secure location for any sensitive data. My Delta College instructor
instilled in me a great deal of caution regarding the possibility of being hacked. Consequently, I
have refrained from using my personal computer and phone for confidential transactions, and I
do not save any information on my computer or in the Cloud. Sensitive data such as account
numbers, passwords, debit card information, and web transactions are confidential. All other
information may be considered safe for public release.
5)Using the asset valuation method presented in this chapter, conduct a preliminary risk
assessment on the information contained in your home. Answer each of the valuation questions
listed in this chapter. What would it cost if you lost all your data?
In my household, other people possess a variety of sensitive documents, including banking
data, credit card information, property deeds, birth certificates, and social security records, which
are kept confidential. Unfortunately, individuals within my household have shown a lack of
regard for this crucial matter, potentially exposing us to theft or fraud. While losing my personal
computer would undoubtedly be emotionally traumatic, it would not have a significant financial
impact, as I maintain backups of all pertinent data on both a desktop and two laptops.
Furthermore, to prevent any potential loss of academic work due to unforeseen events, I have
taken the necessary precaution of backing up all such materials onto an external hard drive.
1.
Which information asset is the most critical to the success of the organization?
The data stored on my computer pertains to academic pursuits and serves as a valuable tool
in achieving higher education and ultimately securing a more lucrative career.
Answer the 2nd Discussion question.
Read and respond to the Ethical Decision making questions in the Closing Case
Mike and Iris were flying home from the meeting. The audit committee’s reaction had not been
what they expected.
“I’m glad they understood the situation,” Mike said. “I’d like you to start revising our risk
management documentation to make it a little more general. It sounds like the board will want to
take our approach company-wide soon.”
Discussion Questions
2) What resources can Iris call on to assist her?
To have a complete understanding, Iris needs to communicate with all department heads,
including upper management, and verify their information with her own. Additionally, she
should seek feedback from consumers of their product to determine what steps to take and what
to avoid in order to improve their perspective.
