Exercises Chapter 7
7. Using the Web, research the costs associated with the following items when implemented by a
firm with 1,000 employees and 100 servers:
Managed antivirus software (not open source) licenses for 500 workstations
I have come across the McAfee Antivirus Plus package, priced at $6.99 for a one-year
subscription per computer. The total cost of acquiring this computer package comes to $3,495.
While a few other options may be available at a cheaper cost, their specific names elude me now.
Cisco firewall (other than residential models from Linksys)
I discovered a powerful firewall designed for medium-sized companies called the Cisco
Secure Firewall 3105. This firewall has an impressive throughput of 10 Gbps, IPS throughput of
10 Gbps, and IPsec VPN throughput of 5.5 Gbps and can support up to 2,000 Maximum VPN
peers. However, it comes with a steep price tag of $17,019.99. There are more affordable
options. The Cisco Firepower 1000 is available for $3,736 but does not pack the same punch as
the original one.
Tripwire host-based IDS for 10 servers
I have now found one. A legitimate license for each server would cost approximately $8000.
While free, open-source alternatives are available, they pose a risk that may not be worth taking.
Therefore, the total cost for ten servers would come to $8000.
Java programming continuing education training program for 10 employees
I have come across a course offered at Central Michigan University, which totals $995 per
student. The course spans six months and consists of 100 hours of coursework. For a group of
ten individuals, the total cost would amount to $9,950.
Checkpoint Firewall solutions
I found one for Check Point 1800 Next Generation Appliance Branch Office Security Gateways
$5,183.57. It is far from the best, but it will get the job done.
Ethical Decision Making
Suppose Mike and Iris make a decision to simply take the higher of each of the values without
regard to how the values were determined by the person who made the initial assessment. Then,
they determine their own rankings among all of the compiled assets. When the list is later
included in the planning process, they represent it as being authoritative because it came from
“all of the managers.”
Is this method, even if it is faster and easier, an ethical way to do business? Why or why
not?
While it may not be ethical, sometimes it can be more expedient to make decisions
unilaterally when in a management position. This can arise if other department heads need more

expertise or knowledge to make informed choices. It can be simpler for one person to take charge
