IDS-100-R4202: Perspective in Liberal Arts

Before starting this course at SNHU, I knew nothing about the liberal arts and why it is so
vital and important in being able to advance forward in the world. Towards the end of this
course, I learned that the four lenses are a major part of life and how we innovate and progress
forward. The history lens is all about the study of past events through artifacts, personal letters,
firsthand experiences, documents, studies, articles, and pictures.
It’s mostly the study of
disciplines, ethics, and culture all over the world. Allowing humans to develop critical thinking
skills which makes us ask questions and seek out multiple perspectives to develop our own
opinion (SNHU, 2017). The humanity lens is about perspectives, and understandings of cultures,
experiences, and values. Studying through this lens allows the world to continually adapt our
products and services to the ever-changing society. The social science lens focuses on the study
of human behaviors and relationships throughout many different cultures. Like how a
phycologist studies a persons’ emotional, cognitive, and social behaviors.
Lastly, the natural
science lens is focused on the physical study of the world and life itself by developing questions
and working with the STEM professions: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(SNHU n.d.).
Now these four lenses can all be similar and different in their own ways. I perceive the
humanities and social science lenses to be similar when looking at letters and autobiographies
written about specific topics. Those could be firsthand accounts of interactions or experiences
between humans. They are also different in the way that history is looking at past events while
humanities look towards the cultural background.
With the natural science lens studying the
physical world and life itself, the history lens is remarkably similar in the way that people study
past events in the world such as 9/11 or World War II. They both use inductive reasoning in their
explanations such as general observations or conclusions. Now, although the natural science and
3
social science can be similar, they are also different. Natural science studies the physical world
and events that have happened whereas social science studies the interactions of humans and
society.
For this class project, I have decided to focus on Justice. For me personally, I have not
dealt much with the justice system. At most, I’ve gotten a simple parking ticket or a warning to
fix a headlight that was burnt out. Other than that, I try to stay to out of trouble. But I have had a
personal experience working in health care with a male African American coworker who most of
our patients would refuse to receive care from this employee due to personal views and opinions.
On the days that I worked with this specific person, the other staff and I knew that we would
have to trade tasks throughout the day to accommodate our patients. Breaking this experience
down through the four lenses I can see that through the history and humanities lenses, most of
these older patients were not comfortable having a male employee let alone an African American
person in their room. They didn’t feel comfortable and had thoughts that this employee would
steal their belongings or abuse them. Through the social science lens, one can see how the
patients were responding to having a colored employee helping them and refused the assistance
by asking for a different caretaker. Now in this situation, the only thing that I can compare to the
natural science lens was how I worked with my fellow employee on how the patients liked their
routines done and worked with them to recreate the routines in the same manner to allow our
patients to feel more comfortable. In the end, I always made sure to reassure them that my
coworker was highly skilled and would not be on staff if they were a thief.
Knowing what I knew prior this assignment, I have some questions that I really would
like to know: Why are incarceration rates in the U.S. so high compared to other countries?
How
much of the incarcerations are drug related? What happens to all the drugs, money, and other

contraband that gets confiscated from a drug bust by the police? What type of affect do famous
people have on our communities in relation to racism and discrimination? And finally, how can
one be confident in a defense attorney and their knowledge of forensic science to help them win
their case?
For the total amount of incarcerations between 1985 and 2000, most of the convictions
were drug related with two thirds in the federal system whereas at the state level it was more than
half (Alexander, 2011. Pg 11). Having such high rates of drug incarcerations made me wonder if
there is an underlying motivational factor to making arrests with drug busts. According to the
federal drug forfeiture laws, states and local law enforcement agencies are allowed to keep up to
80% of cash, cars, and homes seized from drug suspects (Alexander 2011. Pg 18). With all the
additional money coming in from those seizures, one would think that the police force would not
only be motivated to get more drugs off the streets but also bring in extra cash to put towards
special projects, additional training, and more staff. At least, that’s what I can see as an outsider.
Although, how is one supposed to trust that their lawyer is doing everything that they can
to defend them? From education conferences, polls showed that roughly 5% of lawyers and
judges studies science
(Epstein, 2016, p.
2
). What are the odds that everyone would get lucky
enough to have a defense counsel that it knowledgeable enough to prove their innocence? The
way I see it, zero to none. That sure gives me a load of confidence if I were to ever find myself in
a sticky situation.
As far as famous singers and song writers, in today’s day and age, much of the population
listen to a variety of music. Ranging from country to hip hop and R&B. I’ve seen it take less than
24 hours for a new song to be released and it have close to 1.5 million listens on any given
streaming service or platform. Following George Floyds murder back in 2020, there were more
5
than two dozen musicians who had released new songs in relation to the inequality, police
violence, and obvious racism that was being experienced all over the United States (Ryan, P.
2020). And these songs didn’t take long to really take off in popularity due to a lot of people
finding that they related to the words that the artist was trying to convey. Mainly trying to let
their listeners know that they are not alone in this world and to keep their heads held high.
Looking through the four lenses, I can see where many people can find solace in music and
relating to others all around the world.
For this project, I decided to find the similarities and differences between the History and
Social Science lenses. Within the topic, the history lens will allow me to look back at the studies,
facts, and stories from many eras as well as how changes occurred and progressed throughout the
years. For instance, how plantations used incarcerated men to work to buy their freedom. Those
plantations got semi free labor and worked those men until they were dead. Looking through the
history lens also will allow me to form my own opinions and develop questions to further my
research. Like when convict leasing ended and what was the cause.
The social science lens will
allow me to understand how people view and perceive justice. As well as studying human
behaviors during past events or societies of the past. Mainly focusing on how people acted.
Learning about human behaviors during major events would give insight to how their behaviors
affected the changes that occurred.
While studying the history of the justice system and seeing how it has changed both
positively and negatively through the years, one can also view and study the behaviors of people
and how those behaviors contributed to the changes within the history. Social science also
focuses on making predictions with human behavior. With the study of human behavior, comes
6
the history behind how people’s views on racism, drugs, and inequality have progressed or
regressed simply through their stories, articles, and artifacts from past major events.
Viewing justice through the history lens would mainly be focusing on past events or
movements such as Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech, or the BLM movement
associated with the death of George Floyd in 2020 all while being in a sequential order. While
looking at justice through the social science lens, one would see that not only is the focus geared
towards human relationships and behaviors, but also looking at predictions of how humans have
behaved in the past, present, and future in relation to racism, drugs, and the justice system.
Before starting this project, I was simply unaware of the four lenses in liberal arts.
Reading about them and being able to apply them to this project has allowed me to think of
questions from many different angles. In turn, learning about them and being able to apply them
to my topic has helped me gain tons of knowledge about Justice and the issues people are facing
and have continued to battle with over the years. Furthering research from the history and social
science lenses could potentially provide more data and information to spark ideas on positive
changes that could be made in the future. Studying human behaviors with the social science lens
would spark ideas as to how people have reacted to events and movements over the years to
make predictions and plan on their reactions in the future as well. If I were to continue my
research on this topic, I would really like to focus on how the world is handling human
trafficking, drug use, and mental health. Seeing as these issues are apart of my personal life, I
would want to search more into these issues to learn how I can help create a positive change in
the world.
