After reading this week’s resources, I found some key points or characteristics to each of
the lenses. The history lens is mostly the study disciplines, ethics, and culture all over the world.
Allowing humans to develop critical thinking skills which makes us ask questions and seek out
multiple perspectives to develop our own opinion. (SNHU, 2017). The humanity lens is about
perspectives, and understandings of cultures, experiences, and values. The social science lens
focuses on the study of society and relationships with people. Specifically human behaviors and
looking for predictable trends within humans. And finally, the natural science lens is focused on
the physical study of the world and life itself by developing questions and working with the
STEM professions: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (SNHU Module 3
intro.).
Now these four lenses can all be similar in their own ways. I perceive the humanities and
social science lenses to be similar when looking at letters and autobiographies written about
specific topics. Those could be firsthand accounts of interactions or experiences between
humans. With the natural science lens studying the physical world and life itself, the history lens
is remarkably similar in the way that we study past events in the world such as 9/11 or World
War II. They both use inductive reasoning in their explanations such as general observations or
conclusions. Now although the natural science and social science can be similar, they are also
different. Natural science studies the physical world and events that have happened whereas
social science studies the interactions of humans and society.
For my project, I have decided to focus on Justice. Mainly focusing on the larger
problems and issues that our justice professionals are battling today. Problems such as Human
trafficking, mental illness, and drugs. These issues all have similar things in common or coincide
together in some way. In cases where teens or young adults become addicted to drugs and turn to
3
trafficking to support their drug habits. Or not having proper support for mentally ill patients
who have turned to crime. According to the State.gov website regarding human trafficking, the
COVID-19 pandemic caused an increase in individuals vulnerable to human trafficking. And
traffickers adapted their existing tactics to take advantage of the unique circumstances of the
pandemic (“2021 trafficking in persons report,” 2021). In my home state of Oregon, mental
illness is higher than it has ever been. According to kff.org, between September 29
th
to October
11
th
, 2021, 34.6 % of adults in Oregon reported symptoms of anxiety and/ or depressive disorder,
compared to 31.6% of adults in the U.S (“Mental health and substance use state fact sheets,”
2021). By the end of this project, I want to know more about how our justice system is working
to lower these numbers and find the diverse ways to help and find what resources are local to me.
This topic hits close to home for me as I have family who have passed away due to drugs and
have close friends who have suffered from mental illness long before the pandemic had hit.
Knowing more about our justice system could give me more insight on how the system is
helping people versus just throwing them in jail.
