WEEK 1- HOME WORK 1 Week 1: Home Work Comparison of Project Management Software Tools Maheswara Penugonda IST 7060 Wilmington University Professor: 05-15-2022
WEEK 1- HOME WORK 2 Comparison of Project Management Software Tools Project management software plays an important role in managing projects by efficiently handling the project management processes. The project management tools provide an efficient model to manage the project scope, preparation of the project plan, schedule the tasks, assign the resources, budget the tasks, monitor the project progress, and control the projects, and project closure. The most commonly used project management software tool is MS project and this tool helps to manage individual projects, as well as a portfolio of projects at an enterprise. The project management software tools are expanding their features and capabilities to meet the growing needs of project management. The enterprise environments are comparing diversified tools to build an efficient strategy to invest the funds in the adaptation of enterprise portfolio management tools. The project management tools are well-defined to sustain the growing needs of enterprise project requirements. Project Management Software Tools Over Spreadsheet or Database It is well evident that project management tasks and processes are managed with the use of spreadsheets and databases. But the project management software provides an advantage over the traditional practices of using spreadsheets and databases. The spreadsheets are used to manage the data in the form of tables with rows and columns. The spreadsheets are widely used for managing projects that are with simple tasks. The spreadsheets are primarily used for data management and information management. The use of macros can help to build an efficient program on spreadsheets to manage the project tasks and perform the data analysis. The spreadsheet may not handle the complex project and relationships between the various components of the projects. The spread sheet has limitations in discovering the project bottlenecks and progression of the projects (Aalst, 2018).
WEEK 1- HOME WORK 3 The spreadsheets have rich data analytics capabilities but require programs to be customized according to the project needs. The project management tools play an important role in managing the project according to the project parameters including scheduling, budgeting, controlling, and other project management processes. The project management tools are advanced database systems and spreadsheets that are efficient in the organization of the tasks of the project. The project management tools help to do project planning with work breakdown structure, resource management, assigning of resources, and managing the tasks (Alam, 2019). The project management software provides the software program with flexibility to manage the projects using different methodologies. The project management software provides rich visualizations like Gantt charts and other reporting capabilities for faster decision-making. The project management software provides an efficient model to manage the project issues and organize the projects to drive value for the business with scalability to program level and portfolio level (Nyandongo & Lubisi, 2019). Comparison of MS Project with Project Management Software Tools MS Project In the project management world, the MS project is considered to be rich software for managing the project at the enterprise level. MS Project provides scalability for the projects to drive efficient project management practices recommended by PMBOK. MS Project provides a platform for performing the work breakdown structure for the tasks and assigning the resources to the tasks granular level. MS project provided rich features like PERT analysis and Gantt charts to monitor the project progress and control the project tasks. MS Project provides rich reporting capabilities ranging from a single project to multiple projects. MS Project can provide an efficient platform for managing the projects, but other project management tools provide equivalent features (Microsoft, 2022). Some of the project management tools compared with MS projects are Base Camp, Tello, and Asana.

WEEK 1- HOME WORK 4 Basecamp Basecamp is a project management tool that has features and capabilities beyond project management. Basecamp provides better management of the work and performance by building efficient communication management. Basecamp provides features like messaging, task management, scheduling, document management, group chats, and automatic check-ins. Basecamp is a good tool that can manage the projects in traditional as well as agile project management. Basecamp is available for $99 per month to manage multiple projects, and multiple users without any user fees (Basecamp, 2022). Trello Trello is a project management tool to manage projects with rich features like boards, lists, and cards. Trello provides the boards for managing the project tasks and provided built- in automation. Trello provides integrated work tools to enhance project management capabilities (Trello, 2022a). Trello provided free services for the whole team, standard for $5 per user per month, premium services for $10, and enterprise for $17.50 for 25 users (Trello, 2022b). Asana Asana is one of the project management tools that provides rich features for project management on mobile platforms and web platforms. Asana provides a workflow builder for automation of the processes, timelines with Gantt charts, and Kanban boards for tracking, Calendars, app integrations, and reporting. Asana is a good tool that supports the mobile platform for project management as well as portfolio management (Asana, 2022a). Asana is free to use with limited features but provides premium features for $10.99 per user per month, business features for $24.99 per user per month, and enterprise features at negotiable pricing. Asana is providing flexibility to manage the project and portfolio of projects with collaboration (Asana, 2022b).
WEEK 1- HOME WORK 5 Organization’s Justification for Investments in Portfolio Project Management Software The organizations must invest in the portfolio project management software because the organizational needs are changing with every project. The project is a short endeavor, but the enhancements for the projects are growing. The tracking of the projects is difficult because of multiple information sources. The portfolio project management software helps to manage the projects with a single source of information. The project can be well handled with the project scope, budgeting, and scheduling to manage the projects with minimal constraints. The project management software will help to plan the projects in the portfolio and manages the dependencies between the projects. The features like resource-leveling can help to manage the workforce with optimal utilization between the projects. The project management tools help to control the project budgets and allocations with tracking. The bottle-necks in the projects can be well handled with the project management tools. The visualizations, dashboards, and reporting help to manage the projects with efficient decision-making (Sanchez et.al, 2017). Conclusion The project and portfolio management with the project management software helps to build an efficient process to manage the projects. MS project is a powerful project management tool, but there are alternative tools that can support both traditional and agile project management. The project management tools should be wisely selected by understanding the pricing models and capabilities. The project management software with enterprise capabilities provides value to the business with efficient tracking and monitoring of the projects.
