Mark Twain CMGTCB/554 – Competency 3 – Final Reflection Understanding how modern IT environments are structured and can be upgraded to meet the growing demand of technology in our world is an ongoing process. Technology innovation is constant, and adapting to this will be key to personal success as well as organizational success. Having a foundational understanding of how everything comes together in an IT environment will be instrumental to upgrading and adding to any existing IT infrastructure. When adding software systems and applications to an existing IT infrastructure, the system requirements should be noted so that the infrastructure can support those requirements. Implementation of cloud-based systems has various considerations to take into account, such as security measures and risk mitigation to secure data in cloud hosted environments. If an organization doesn’t take mitigation measures into account, customer data can be subject to theft. An organization’s reputation can be severely damaged in the event of a major intrusion and loss of customer data. While working on a small project at my employer, it was determined that not only would a few Wi-Fi access points need to be replaced, but that the cabling to these access points would need to be updated. Upon further inspection, it was found that the cabling was of various types and would not be able to provide the best bandwidth for the new access points. What was originally going to be a small project with a cost of about $2500, turned into a massive re-cabling project for our entire school district, which is three high schools and a district office. With new cabling we also needed new switches, patch panels, racks, and eventually upgrades to fiber. A report of the recommendations was put together to present to administrators because the project would take more than a year to complete, and close to $3,000,000. My team and I had to walk all the buildings, check closets, server rooms, remove ceiling tiles to locate the existing cabling, and put together a network diagram of what, to the best of our knowledge, was in our buildings. There was so much that couldn’t be located based on a decades old network diagram that hadn’t been updated because cables ran through unknown conduits. The new cabling would be ran over new J-hooks where we would actually map them and easily access where they would be ran. This cabling would essentially be the backbone of our new wireless network that would run most of our mobile computing infrastructure and resources. We were moving to a one-to-one environment with our students and issuing them each a Chromebook device and later they received a tablet that worked as its own hotspot for the student to utilize at home. The risks associated with adding 10,000+ mobile devices to our network were great, we now had 10,000 devices that can be used as a gateway to our network. Firewalls were updated and added, Blocksi was added to manage Chromebooks, Radix was also added to manage the fleet of our interactive flat panels, this also being a device using our wireless network. Several improvement proposals were made regarding our infrastructure upgrades, as well as mobile device upgrades and software solutions to manage them, In this course the network diagram work was very useful, I wish I had access to MS Visio a year ago when I had to draw out network diagrams for our classrooms and their technology resources. Now that I know how to use Visio a bit, I will be using it for future plans that I need to draw out.
I’ve mentioned in previous courses that what would improve the learning experience in these courses is if we had a resource or an example on how to write some of the papers, not only the APA template, but an example of a chart we must create or a presentation, spreadsheet, and such. Having an example would definitely aid in structuring how our assignments should look and what type of content would look neater for review.
